#101 Terminology of the Spirit's Infilling

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: The Bible is not written in the form of a theological manual. Scripture writers describe God's grace at work in the soul and urge us to appropriate that grace.

The Bible includes testimonies of those transformed by God's grace. Scripture uses human pictorial language, and many of the deepest theological truths are described in picture words and phrases. (Google image, Bible)

No one human word or phrase can by itself adequately describe the work of God's grace in the soul. Therefore, God uses many such terms. The wholeness of Scripture truth can be understood only as we use all the terms which the Spirit inspired the writers to use.

It is true that we must use spiritual discernment in using and applying these terms, but the Holy Spirit is given us to enable us to study, discern, understand, and synthesize all of Scripture into one beautiful, practical whole.

Among the Scripture terms used for the infilling of the believer are these:

Filled with the Spirit (Acts 2:4)
Filled to the measure of all the fullness of God (Eph. 3:19)
Clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49)
Baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5)
Baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matt. 3:11)
The outpouring of the Spirit on a person (Acts 2:17, 33)

Other terms often used in Christian testimony include the empowering of the Spirit and the anointing of the Spirit. These last two terms, however, are more wisely used for the many forms of divine enablement through the Holy Spirit.

These have been used both for the initial infilling of the Spirit and also for subsequent new empowerings and infillings.

Let's pray:

Father, we so appreciate how Your Word describes Your work of grace in the soul, and how You urge us to appropriate that grace, making it our own.
You've put in Your Word testimonies of people who were transformed by Your grace. May we be encouraged through the truths described in the picture words and phrases we find there.
Thank You that Your Spirit is available to enable us to study, discern, understand, and to harmonize all of Scripture into one beautiful, practical whole.
Help us consider this provision of Your help, as we attempt to apply them to our lives. We trust that in our reading and hearing Your Word, we'll choose to honor You.
We ask this in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Today's Bible verses-

1 Peter 5:6, 7 "Humble yourselves therefore under
the might hand of God, that he may exalt you in due
time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth f
       or you."

Prov. 17:27 (NKJV) "He who has knowledge spears his
words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit."

Acts 4:31 (NKJV) "And when they had prayed, the
place where they were assembled together was
shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke the word of God with boldness."

The Awesome Gift of Choice

"Do tho things just happen to you or do you cause things to happen?
Do you make your own choices or do you allow others to choose for you?
Do you feel as if you are in control your life or do you feel as if your life is out of control?"
Today's quote-

Dr. Darren Canning- "A momentary trouble may seem eternal, but it isn’t.  God sees eternity.  He sees that trouble produces the character of His presence in the lives of those He loves. Romans 5:3-5 says, “(3) And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations,  knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; (4) and perseverance, character; and character, hope. (5) Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Your trial your tribulation is producing is the character of Christ inside of you.  Don’t hurry from the storm, but let it produce what God wants it to produce in your life.  You will not be destroyed.  That is a lie of the devil.  In Christ you are eternal.  You will suffer, and it may seem long but God’s grace inside of you is producing something far greater – a hope of Glory.
I declare that you are strong, even though you may feel weak.  I declare that you are becoming like this man in the boat [in his dream]. Your joy shall be full even in the face of the greatest obstacles that come your way.   (Emphasis added)

Today's question-

What is it that made you who you are today?

Think back 20 years ago. What decisions were you making? It
is true that decisions you made then, have had a profound influence on your life up til now.
Christians are to read and "digest" the Bible, to have effective words for others; for what we take in will determine what we live by and share.
Our characters are made by making good choices. What we do
in secret proves it, as well as everyday living. Your life needs to
be what others see as a good example of God's standard of righteousness.
God's more interested in your character than anything you may do for Him. It's the heart He examines, my friend. There's no impact or influence with a lack of character.
Praying for the Spirit's guidance is of utmost importance in the building of our character and service to God.
