#93 Why Is Prevailing Prayer Necessary?

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel- To prevail is "to be successful in the face of difficulty, to completely dominate, to overcome and triumph."  Prevailing prayer is prayer that pushes right through all difficulties and obstacles, drives back all the opposing forces of Satan, and secures the will of God.

Its purpose is to accomplish God's will on earth. Prevailing prayer is prayer that not only takes the initiative but continues on the offensive for God until spiritual victory is won. (Google image,  Men praying together )

In many situations, before prayer is answered, people must take certain actions. Whether they are saved or unsaved people, human beings cannot control others' wills because God has given us freedom to choose. In addition to human influence, the Holy Spirit and Satan are influencing the thought life of human beings.

The Holy Spirit speaks directly through God's Word, through other people's words, and often through angels who suggest thoughts without the person being aware of the source. He may prepare circumstances that exert pressure or make certain actions possible.

Similarly, Satan, the master of deception, tries to influence the thought life of people, whether through the actions or words of others or through demonic suggestion.

Prevailing prayer is necessary in the following situations:

To oppose Satan in his battle for souls.  When you pray for an unsaved person to yield to Christ, you are praying in harmony with God's will, with the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and with the assistance of God's angels. But you are also praying in direct opposition to Satan and against the actions of all his evil spirits.

Even when we are sure we are praying in accordance with the will of God, we are often met with surprising resistance. God never overpowers the human will. He speaks to conscience, but a person's conscience may be deadened. Satan's prime battle ground is the human mind, and his demons must be resisted and driven away.

In the case of a sinner, it is comparatively easy for Satan to get a hearing for his suggestions. Serious prayer is necessary to offset his diabolical schemes.

To overcome the satanic seduction of Christians.  Even strong believers are subject to demonic suggestion. One one occasion Satan succeeded in persuading David to take a wrong action by "inciting' his mind (1 Chron. 21:1).

He guided Peter's thought processes in an encounter with Jesus, and Jesus instantly realized that Peter was unconsciously voicing Satan's suggestions (Matt. 16:23). Satan also injected evil thoughts into the minds of James and John (Luke 9:55-56).

Sometimes even the most spiritual may temporarily lapse into uncharacteristic displays of weakness. The critical word spoken in a committee meeting, the malicious gossip whispered in conversation, the lack of faith evidenced in decision-making may actually have originated as a suggestion from one of Satan's demons.

If Satan could penetrate even the mind of Christ, tempting Him for forty days and forty nights (Matt. 4:1-11), then we should not be surprised that we need to prevail in prayer.

To protect yourself or others from direct satanic attack.  Job was not the only one who was attacked physically by Satan. One wonders, however, if Job's trials might have been lifted much sooner if his three "friends" had been praying Christians! The thorn in Paul's flesh was a messenger of Satan (2 Cor. 12:7). Luke 13:10-17 tells of a woman crippled for eighteen years by Satan. In Mark 9:17-20 a demon spirit robbed a boy of speech and caused convulsions.

Near-fatal accidents have often convinced Christian workers that Satan was trying to destroy them. In the mountains of India, while en route to ministry, our Christian co-workers have suddenly been confronted by wild animals. A new group of believers was frightened one New Year's Eve by a trumpeting herd of elephants, who had demolished their simple church structure on three previous occasions.

Let's pray-

Father, help us understand that to be successful in overcoming our difficulties, we must learn to prevail in praying. Through praying, we push through our difficulties and obstacles to secure Your will for us.

As You've given us the freedom to choose, we cannot control other's decisions. We can pray for Your Holy Spirit to influence them through our lives, Your Word and circumstances that can exert pressure on them to believe.

When we pray for unsaved persons to yield to Christ, we're praying in harmony with Your Holy Spirit. When we come against Satan's actions of all his evil spirits, there will be resistance. As Satan speaks to the minds of people, so we must pray against his evil spirits' work there, to resist and drive them away through prevailing prayer.

There have been times that we've witnessed Your protection on lives through our prevailing prayers. Our continued prayers for friends, family and missionaries are so necessary for their help and protection. May we be encouraged to continue to pray faithfully for them.

We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen

Today's Bible verses-

John 16:33 (AMPC)Matthew 28:20b (AMP) “. . . in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]” And, “I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 5:16  “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Proverbs 4: 23 (ICB) "Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life."

Quotes for today-

~ F. B. Meyer- "Paul himself would never have known what Jesus could be unless he had been beset by that thorn in his flesh. There was a phase in the Savior's grace which he would have never known unless that infirmity had befallen him. Then he realized that his sufferings had provided a new angle of vision, a better platform for God's saving help. Therefore he was writing rather to suffer, that the power of Christ might compensate for his deficiency; for when he was weak the strength of the Son of God was more than enough." (The All-Sufficiency of Christ, Herald of His Coming paper, Vol. 80 No. 1/2 (949-950)

~Mary Southerland- "In the war with temptation, our greatest battlefield is the mind. We are constantly at war for its control. Everything we do or say originates with a single thought. Filling our minds with truth fills our lives with truth. . .
If our mind is not filled with truth, the enemy will pollute it with lies. Polluted minds produce polluted lives. God’s Word is a powerful purification system for the mind, reprogramming and training thoughts to line up according to God’s standards."

Today's guest post-

HELP

Lisa Buffaloe- Life’s journey is often difficult and trials are many. If you are going through hardships, the Bible contains a rich storehouse of treasure verses to help you through whatever difficulties you may face. Please take time to not only read God’s word but remember His words are written personally for you to find the peace and joy of His presence.

Today's question-

        What do we boast about?

It's important to keep an eye on what transforms us. As Christians, the cross is what we're to boast about. It is our symbol of hope and faith. If we covet anything else other than the cross, we know nothing of the importance of the cross.

Satan wants us to be deceived into believing his lies are true. He takes every opportunity to distract us from Christ's will and way. He wants us to distrust that, through the effect of Christ's dying on the cross for us, He paved the way back to the Father in heaven.

As the wages of sin is death, we're to be careful to maintain our relationship with the Father and His power to save us. Our boasting is to be in what Christ accomplished for us on the cross. He gave His life for you and me. We owe Him our dedication of life, to live lives that honor Him.
