Treasure Book

Will you give it way?

Cathy Baker asks us a good question. "What five items would you grab if your house was set ablaze?

When asked this question, our Bible study group responded with a variety of answers but one item stood out among the rest—their Bibles. But why?

Bibles are replaceable. One visit to your local Christian bookstore proves the point. So why would most Christ-followers, including myself, place their personal Bible in the top five grab list?

My guess is that over time our Bibles become a road map of spiritual landmarks.

Personal notes jotted in the margins that immediately take us back to a specific time and place—highlighted verses recalling truths too easily forgotten.

It’s not just a Bible I’m grasping for in the flames, it’s my Bible.

I’m convinced, however, the Kingdom advanced for God’s glory because Becky, a dear friend of mine, chose not to see her personal Bible as one to keep, but rather, one as God’s to give away.

Upon learning that a young woman with serious addictions did not own a Bible, Becky handed hers of twenty-five years over to the struggling stranger without hesitation.

Numerous notations and personal praises had been recorded in the margins, but this Bible was especially meaningful to Becky because it had been given to her as a birthday gift from her husband, who was killed in an automobile accident several years earlier.

Becky treasured her Bible—but not above the living Word, Jesus Christ.

Want a storybook ending? You won’t find it here.

The young woman hasn't been seen or heard of since, but we know she holds in her hand a living, breathing, powerhouse of God’s presence because He allowed her path to cross Becky’s that night.

Only God knows, but perhaps one day in eternity Becky will introduce her husband to the divinely appointed recipient of his birthday gift—a young woman whose life was radically changed because an eternal perspective trumped a temporal one.

Would you be willing to give away your personal Bible without hesitation? God’s Word is eternal, pages are but temporal.

Are you allowing earthly things, no matter how good, to interfere with God’s eternal desires for your life?"

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1
