#44 Inflicting False Guilt

C. Peter Wagner gives us some
understanding about inflicting false
guilt on others:

"The message that often comes through is;

'What He is doing through me, He also wants to do through you. If you really want to, you can do the same powerful ministry I do...make up your mind to do whatever is necessary so that with the help of God you can also do the ministry I am doing.'

The unintended result of projecting spiritual gifts on others who have been given different gifts is false guilt, discouragement and frustration.

The guilt is false because people who do not have the particular spiritual gift try to do what the gifted ones do, and find they cannot.

So where do they assign the blame?
  • Am I not spiritual enough?
  • Do I have unconfessed sin?
  • Am I unworthy of God's love?
  • Is God mad at me?
  • Don't I pray enough?
  • If only I was as consecrated to God as this spiritual giant I am listening to, I would be able to match their effectiveness in ministry!
Another frequent projection is the gift of intercession, and that is why I have brought up the subject.

The historical heroes of the faith such as Praying Hyde, John Welch, David Brainerd and Adoniram Judson obviously had the spiritual gift of intercession.

But so does this particular pastor (who's words were quoted above) of our own generation who tells of spending three to five hours each day in prayer and whom I have heard say in public, 'If Reverend so-and-so prayed as much as I do each day, his church would be as large as mine!'

(You might want to review Paul's teaching in 1 Cor. 12-14)

Although God has given the gift of intercession to some and not to others according to His plan, He has given every one of us the role of prayer and intercession.

We must all be pray-ers and growing in our prayer life. Few pastors have the gift of intercession and can be expected to pray two to five hours a day as intercessors do.

But all have the role of prayer and intercession and by using the role they can and should pray between 22 minutes and 1 hour a day without feeling guilty about not praying more."

Today’s post -#Inflicting False Guilt, in the series taken from C. Peter Wagner’s book, PRAYER SHIELD, How to intercede for pastors, Christian leaders and others on the spiritual frontlines.(pgs. 87-89) By Regal Books

Let’s pray:

Father, please help us to not be guilty of putting guilt on anyone, just because they don't measure up to what we might think they should be accomplishing.

May we let Your Holy Spirit lead and direct their moving in the giftings You've given them, and not discourage them in any way.

As we pray for others, may our prayers be especially for our church leaders, that they would be wise in handling matters that could cause some frustration, and even unbelief.

May our prayers for our leaders support their efforts to seek Your Mind on matters such as what was mentioned in this post.

In the Name of our Savior we pray. Amen

Today’s Bible verse: Daniel 12:3 "And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever."

Today’s quote: Beth Moore – “Humility takes a supply of supernatural strength that comes only to those strong enough to admit weakness.”

Some thoughts today: We need to work through issues. We need to realize "But God" is applicable to all situations we may have.

- If we're going to walk out our salvation, we'll have to learn God's ways, and begin to think like Him. (see Ephesians chapter 4)

- The Church is still the apple of God's Eye! When we say things that hurt others, He is disappointed, and will bring correction, and will comfort the injured ones. Let's be careful that we don't project our opinions on others, as to what they should do.
