#83 How to Agree in Prayer

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: When two or more Christians are willing to agree in prayer for a need, what steps can they take to make their unity in praying true agreement in heart and soul, the kind of agreement that fulfills the conditions Jesus gave in Matthew 18:19?  (Google image two women praying)

Please do not get legalistically bound to take consciously each of these steps or to follow this exact sequence. Rather, these are aspects that the Spirit will use and in which you can seek the Spirit's help as you seek to agree in prayer that prevails.

1. Agree in the assessment of the need. Seek to unite in seeing the need for which you pray, the reasons for the need, and the urgency. The more you unitedly understand and feel the need, the more your spirits cry to God as one as you intercede.
Seek God's perspective on why it is important to Him. Seek to be completely unbiased, to see it as God's sees it.

2. Agree in deep hunger for God's answer. Perhaps God has already given each of you a real hunger to see God move in answering this prayer. But as you face it together before God's throne, each helps deepen the hunger of the other as you agree together and "amen" each other.
God may see fit to deepen your hunger until you are moved to tears as you pray. Do not hesitate to pray with tears if the Spirit gives you that depth of hunger.
Tears can be precious in God's sight (Ps. 56:8). Jesus prayed with such hunger that He was moved to "loud cries and tears" (Heb. 5:7).

3. Agree in giving God full liberty to work. Agree with each other that God's ways are higher than your ways, that God may have a far better answer than you have even thought of (Isa. 55:8-9).
Agree together that God's time is the best time, the perfect time. Agree that God does not need to show you in advance just how He plans to answer your prayer.

4. Come to agreement in God's will in the matter. Sensing what God desires to do regarding a need is very helpful in effective praying. You can agree in the deepest sense much more totally and powerfully when each of you in assured of God's will in the matter.
As I have indicated elsewhere, some things are always God's will. Other prayer requests are for matters about which we will not know God's will until He discloses it to us.

It is always God's will to save the lost, bless His people, revive the church, and extend His kingdom. It may or may not be God's will to give a person employment at the exact time you suggest.

The person prayed for may be out of God's will in some matter, and God may be teaching a specific lesson that takes time to learn. God may need to teach that person faith.

God may have a better opportunity a little later, and a host of other possibilities my be involved. Success in a particular matter, such as healing, the election of a particular person, or matters of settling a church dispute, involves many possibilities to God's having a plan that you are unaware of.

But as you pray unitedly, you can come to an increasingly clear awareness of God's will or steps you should take. As you continue praying together, His Spirit may begin to witness to you what God's will is in this matter, giving you new deep peace or joyous anticipation.

You can reach a place of assurance, of real spiritual agreement.

Let's pray-
Father, it is our desire to come into agreement with each other about our present need, so we will seek Your will to pray what You direct.
Create in us a deep hunger for Your will and way, as it will be best, and trust Your answer will happen in Your time.
Give us Your peace and assurance in the matter, and may we understand just what Your desire is for those concerned.
As to Your people Israel, our hearts go out to them this week, as their enemies gather together to try to force them to give up some of the holy land You gave their ancestors thousands of years ago.
We ask that You show Yourself mighty on their behalf. You know what's happening, and we look to You for their provision and safety.
We ask this in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Today's Bible verses-

(Isaiah 59:1 KJV) "Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear."

(Isaiah 65:24 KJV) "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."

(Isaiah 55:8, 9 KJV) "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. (9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Today's quote-

Ann Voskamp- "When bridges seem to give way, we fall into Christ's safe arms, true bridge, and not into hopelessness. It is safe to trust!
We can be too weak to go on because His strength is made perfect in utter brokenness and nail-pierced hands help up. It is safe to trust!
We can give thanks in everything because there's a good God leading, working all things into good. It is safe to trust!" (Taken from her book, one thousand gifts, p. 155)

Today's popular post-

Rick Hamlin - "Enough of us have scratched our heads at Paul’s admonition to “pray without ceasing,” wondering if we’re ever to get up from a kneeling position, but if we take Paul’s life for an example–traveling, preaching, tent-making, church-building, letter-writing–we can assume there are multiple ways to pray in the midst of a busy life."
