The Beauty of Brokenness

James Banks- Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese art of mending broken pottery.

Gold dust mixed with resin is used to reattach broken pieces or fill in cracks, resulting in a striking bond. Instead of trying to hide the repair, the art makes something beautiful out of brokenness. (Google image. Broken dish with gold in cracks.

The Bible tells us that God also values our brokenness, when we are genuinely sorry for a sin we have committed. After David engaged in adultery with Bathsheba and plotted the death of her husband, the prophet Nathan confronted Him, and he repented.

David's prayer afterwards gives us insight into what God desires when we have sinned:

"You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you
do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice,
O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise" (Ps. 51:16-17).

When our heart is broken over a sin, God mends it with the priceless forgiveness generously offered by our Savior at the cross. He receives us with love when we humble ourselves before Him, and closeness is restored.

How merciful is God! Given His desire for a humble heart and the breathtaking beauty of His kindness, may another scriptural prayer be ours today:

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know
my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting" (Ps. 139:23-24).

"Loving Father, I want to bring you joy by having
a humble and repentant heart today."

"Godly sorrow leads to joy"

Today's Bible Verse-

“For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15 AMPC).

Seven R's of Restful Living: Resist Resentment
By Jane Ault
"I procrastinated writing this post. I did not want to admit, after writing
two chapters in my book,

Emotional Freedom, on how to identify resentment
and replace it with joy, that I still struggle
with it. However, I now know how to
identify resentment and how to resist it.
I don't feel helpless and remain stuck in it. As my husband would say, "you might not be able to keep a bird from landing on your head, but you can keep it from building a nest there."
In prayer alone

Our prayer today-

Father, we see in Your Word that You also value our brokenness, when we're genuinely sorry for a sin we've committed.
It's understood that You'll not despise our broken and contrite hearts, for which we are deeply grateful.
When our hearts are broken over our sin, You desire to mend it with the priceless forgiveness generously offered by our Savior.
He receives us with love when we humble ourselves before Him, so that the closeness to the Father is restored.
How merciful You are, Lord God! May we offer humble hearts to receive Your kindness.
   In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Bible verses-

"Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee, so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live" (Jer. 38:20 b KJV).

"The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me" (Ps. 138:8 a KJV).

"And your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it, when you turn to the right hand and when you turn to the left' " (Is. 30:21 AMP).

Today's quotes-

~James Banks- "Jesus is the perfect prayer partner—the friend who intercedes for us with immeasurable kindness. His prayers for us are beautiful beyond words, and should encourage us to always pray with thankfulness." (Taken from Our Daily Bread®, © 8/2/2017 by Our Daily Bread Ministries, Grand Rapids, MI. ~ Marsha Hubler- "Tell your loved ones NOW how much you appreciate and love them. Don't wait until you have to watch them suffer in a bed of affliction that rips your heart apart. Forget those silly arguments that amount to nothing in eternity. Treasure the time you have together. You never know what tomorrow may bring."
"Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another" (1 John 4:4).

Today's question-

Do you understand that self-esteem keeps us away from our real need, and God?

We need to realize that our stress is a sure sign of our need of God. Jesus helps us do amazing and difficult things if we'll ask Him. In order to influence the world around us, we need to be infused with His Word.
It doesn't count where you've come from, but what you do with your life that makes the difference. People know who's for Real—men and women after God's Heart, who have victories when they exercise great courage and faith.
