#36 Prayer Releases God's Power

Alvin Vandergriend- James 5:16 "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." "Prayer," said C. Samuel Storms, "in and of itself possesses no power." I was astounded by that statement, and I didn't understand it until I read what Storms said next: " Prayer is powerful because God is powerful, and prayer is the means through which that divine power is released and channeled into our lives" (Reaching God's Ear, p 223) In other words, all the power in prayer is really God's power activated by prayer.  (Google image, Praying man in red cap)

When you pray for another person, there is nothing that flows from you to them — no vibes, no force, no energy. Instead, your prayers go heavenward, and the power of God moves from Him to the ones you pray for.

When the Bible says "prayer . . . is powerful and effective," it means God acts powerfully and effectively through the prayers of His people. Prayer is the instrument by which God has chosen to have His power directed in the universe. Ole Hallesby provides something of a mental picture of how this works:

"This power is so rich and so mobile that all we have to do when we pray is to point to the persons or things to which we desire to have this power applied, and He, the Lord of this power, will direct the necessary power to the desired place" (Prayer, p. 63). What a surprising arrangement — God partnering with human beings to accomplish His purposes!

   R. A. Torrey, enthralled by the enormity of this power, states, "Prayer is the key that unlocks all the storehouses of God's infinite grace and power. All that God is, and . . . has, is at the disposal of prayer. Prayer can do anything that God can do, and as God can do anything, prayer is omnipotent" (The Power of Prayer. p. 17)

Prayer can do what political action cannot, what education cannot, what military might cannot, and what planning committees cannot. All these are impotent by comparison.

Prayer can move mountains. It can change human hearts, families, neighborhoods, cities, and nations. It's the ultimate source of power, because it is the power of Almighty God.

This power is available to the humblest Christian. It was "a man just like us" who prayed "that it would not rain," and God stopped the rain in Israel for three and a half years. Where will the power of your prayers be felt today?

(pp. 94, 95 in Love to Pray- 40 Day Devotional for Deepening Your Prayer Life by Alvin Vandergriend)

Let's pray-

Father, let it be known to us today, where You want Your power directed through our prayers. Put on our hearts the burden for our neighborhoods or workplaces to be praying about.

We praise You for the great power by which you move in our world and govern the affairs of all people. May Your willingness to hear our prayers to direct Your power to places and persons we know through our prayers be what pleases You today.

We confess that we have failed to make use of this great privilege to advance Your cause in the world through our prayers. May we become powerful and effective pray-ers from now on, as we learn to intercede for those who live or work near us, releasing God's power and grace into their lives.

Our prayer we give today, in Jesus' name, is to direct Your grace and power on earth to the very persons we are praying for! Amen.

Notice to my faithful readers:

I have been off of the internet/blog for several weeks, but am returning to it as of today,  since my grandson connected my new modem for faster service! I will be posting one Faith Message each week on Saturdays on the subject of Prayer. This will be in obedience to our Savior's desire for us to begin praying more effectively.

There will be 3 more postings from Alvin Vandergriend's booklet, "Love to PRAY," then I will be drawing from posts on prayer from my past postings on the blog! So many of you no doubt, have not read them, so hopefully, they'll be new to you. I'll copy the main messages and update them to give helpful information each Saturday.

621-625- one-line Scriptures for those of you who want to learn some more verses this week- or to review them from when they were first posted-

621- Psalms 36:9 "For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light."

622- Proverbs 20:24 "Man's goings are of the LORD, how can a man then understand his own way?"

623- Romans 8:16 "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God."

624- Proverbs 14:27 "The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death."

625- Psalms 105:1 "O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the people."

Quote for today-

Samuel Chadwick- "The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the baptism of fire. That is the miracle of Pentecost. It kindles the fires of Christ's soul in the souls of men. they receive, realize and reproduce His mind, His heart, His life. His zeal becomes the al-pervasive character of their lives. They manifest His fervent devotion to the will of the Father, His holy passion for reality and righteousness, His consuming desire to seek and to save the lost. Religion at flame-heat illumines the mind, energizes every faculty, and impassions every element of compassion."

Words of wisdom-

When Satan comes to us with thoughts to cause doubt or depression, we're to speak up with faith in our Mighty Savior, that He knows what we're going through, and He has a good plan for us to overcome the obstacles put in our way of serving Christ Jesus!

 Putting God First

Joyce McCullough tells us about her sister's thoughts:

“How can I possibly feed my family this month if I also pay my tithe to the church?”

"My sister, Debbie, sat at the kitchen table mulling over her grocery list. Times were tough.

She had been forced to cut back on her hours at work after the birth of her second child, and a flexible mortgage rate now required a higher house payment for the last several months."
