Light Overcomes Darkness: Prayer Note #83

Dutch Sheets tells us, “We don’t know that lightning literally flashed when Satan was ousted, but for some reason Jesus used this picture.

He said it was “like lightning” Luke 10:18. I believe it actually flashed. It doesn’t really matter, however, because whether it literally flashed or not, the analogy is certainly given of light overcoming darkness.

This analogy of darkness and light is prevalent throughout Scripture. Another powerful example of God’s light prevailing over the darkness of Satan is at the Cross. John 1:4, 5 says, “In Him was life and life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

The word “comprehend” is the Greek word katalambano, which can mean either ‘comprehend’ or ‘apprehend.’ Many scholars believe it should be translated with the latter word in this passage because the powers of darkness were not trying to comprehend or understand Christ.

They were trying to apprehend or overpower Him, much like a policeman would apprehend a criminal. This makes much more sense to me.
I imagine Satan’s horror when the light of God flashed forth at the Cross, the same light that had expelled him from heaven.”

God is Light: Prayer Note #82

Dutch Sheets tells us, The following verses associate God with light or lightning, and there are numerous others that could be given.

I have italicized various words or phrases to call your attention to the theme of light:

·        1 John 1:5: “And this is the message we have heard from Him and announced to you that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.”

·        Heb. 1:3, (Amp.): “He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light-being, the outraying or radiance of the divine]. And He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God’s] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His might word of power.

When He had by offering Himself accomplished our cleansing of sins and riddance of guilt, He sat down at the right hand of the divine Majesty on High.”

·        1 Tim. 6:16: “Who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.”

(See also James 1:17; Exod. 19:16; Ezek. 1:14; Rev. 4:5.)

At times His light, or the release of it, is associated with His glory. The following verses are examples of this:

·        Luke 2:9: “And the angel of the Lord suddenly stood before the, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.”

·        Luke 9:29, 32: “And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming…Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.”

We read in the margin of the NASB that the word “gleaming” means literally, ‘flashing like lightning.’ Wuest also translates it this way. No wonder Peter wanted to build tabernacles there!)”

(See also 2 Cor. 3:7.)”

[Dutch continues with many more Scriptures such as Eph. 6:17; Rev. 2:16; Rev. 19:15, and Heb. 4:12).]

Prayer Note #82- God is Light, taken from Dutch Sheets’ book, Intercessory Prayer (pgs.181, 182)

The next Prayer Note #83 on 10/22: Light Overcomes Darkness

2 Cor. 4:6, 7 (MSG), "For God Who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts so as [to beam forth] the Light for the illumination of the knowledge of the majesty and glory of God [as it is manifest in the Person and is revealed] in the face of Jesus Christ" (the Messiah). [check Gen. 1:3]

Mysterious Ways: Send Me Your Light

Kenny Hanning of Nelsonville, Ohio, tells us, "A tornado struck my neighborhood—I had to get home to see if my wife and grandson were okay..."

"My pickup’s headlights pierced through the murky twilight as I sped up the country road through the woods.

I needed to get home... if home was still there. Up ahead, fallen trees spilled out onto the asphalt like a pile of giant pick-up sticks.

I slammed on the brakes. I would have to go on by foot, three quarters of a mile through the debris and the dark. I hadn’t been to church in 40 years, but now I prayed harder than ever. Please God, help me find my family.

Earlier that September evening, four funnel clouds had formed into one massive tornado just outside Nelsonville, Ohio—where I live with my wife and grandson.

At the time, TV reports showed the storm was headed straight for my mother’s house, ten miles away. 'I’ll come get you, Mom,' I assured her, and hopped in my truck.

I had just arrived there when my mother’s phone rang. It was my daughter calling. 'Dad! Thank God you’re all right,' she said. 'Is Mom there?”

'She’s at home,' I said. 'I just got to your grandma’s.'

'No.' Her voice sounded frozen. 'Dad, the tornado changed direction. It… it just hit your neighborhood. I can’t reach Mom on the phone.'

'No, don’t tell me that,' I said. My blood ran cold. I dropped the phone and jumped in the pickup, flooring it home.

Now, I left the truck and climbed and crawled as fast as I could through the thick debris. With a quarter mile to go, the last traces of light faded from the sky. I tripped over tree trunks and jagged remains tore at my legs. I was stumbling blind.

God, I prayed. Send me a light, so I can see my way home.

A hopeless prayer. The tornado had knocked out power everywhere. And yet… I saw a glow beneath a fallen tree, ten feet away. I staggered over and picked it up.

It was a solar powered yard light, blown there from who knows where. I lifted it, and it seemed to shine brighter. So bright that I could finally make out a safe path.

I found my house damaged, but still standing. My wife and grandson were shaken, but okay.

We all went to church that following Sunday, thankful no lives were lost in the storm, and for the guiding light that helped me find home—a light that still burned bright all through the next day."

#50 You Will be Accountable to Warn of Dangers

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: God made clear to Ezekiel that his role as a prophet made him responsible for the eternal destiny of those he contacted.

   a. You are responsible to see as God sees. At the very beginning of Jeremiah's ministry God gave him a vision and then asked him, "What so you see?" (Jer. 1:11). (Google image, Ezekiel's vision

#12 Paul's Prayer Partners: Euodia and Syntyche

C. Peter Wagner shares with us his thoughts from his book, PRAYER SHIELD:

"Few commentators have recognized the high probability that Euodia and Syntyche of the church at Philippi were two of Paul's personal prayer partners see Phil. 4: 2, 3.

Many commentators stress that the women were not getting along well and 'possibly they assisted him with material help as Lydia had done some years before.'

The inference is that, like good women, they perhaps cooked Paul's meals and sewed patches on his garments.

A few commentators do see Euodia and Syntyche playing a much more crucial role in Paul's ministry.

F. F. Bruce, for example, points out that the verb for "labored side by side with me in the gospel" is a very strong verb. He says, 'Whatever form these two women's collaboration with Paul in his gospel ministry may have taken, it was not confined to making tea for him and his circle—or whatever the first-century counterpart to that activity was.'

The verb to which F. F. Bruce refers (synathleo) really means that they 'contended' or 'strived' or 'fought at my side.'

Edmond Heibert says it ' implies united action in the face of opposition and strife' so the metaphor 'pictures these women as having served as Paul's fellow soldiers in the battle to establish the gospel in Philiippi.'

This brings us closer to the concept of spiritual warfare.

F. W. Beare goes on to argue that these two courageous women were 'pitted along with Paul "against principalities and powers...against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" of Eph. 6:12, who employ the human opponents of the gospel as their tools.'

I quote these recognized biblical scholars not to pretend I am writing an academic monograph, but only to lend some professional credibility to the understanding I have developed of Euodia and Syntyche.

I suggest a substantial possibility that Paul is implying these two women did spiritual warfare on my behalf.'

If so, they would fit snugly int the profile of personal intercessors or prayer partners I am developing in this book.

If nothing else, it helps me suppose that the apostle Paul would understand and approve of what I am trying to say."

Today’s post -#1 The Power of Personal Prayer Partners, in the series taken from C. Peter Wagner’s book, PRAYER SHIELD, How to intercede for pastors, Christian leaders and others on the spiritual frontlines. (pgs. 36, 37) By Regal Books

The next post is to be 7/30, The Vital Few, from C. Peter Wagner’s book, PRAYER SHIELD.

Let’s pray: Father, it is our desire to become more effective in our praying. We ask that you help us surrender to Your leading in praying for those in leadership. They're human, and they need Your help daily, hourly, and moment by moment, just like we do. We pray this in the wonderful Name of Jesus', the One Who made a way to Your throne of grace. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ez, 22:30 "And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land."

Today’s quote:
Cindy Sproles When Paul shared about his thorn of the flesh, he wanted us to see our successes weren't where God’s power would shine brightest, rather through our weaknesses. He said this gift of grace was sufficient. It’s all we really need.

When hardships, decisions, and frustrations attack, God’s power becomes evident to those around us. We rest in the promise of His care because He’s got our backs. God’s might is lived out through these rough patches. From hard to difficult, to resolved, to peace -- His power shines.”

Our thought today: God does not keep score of your good and bad actions. It's no more a game of does and don'ts. Christ finished the provision of your salvation on the Cross. Let Him take care of your sins. He proved for your sins way back there!

Mysterious Ways/Somebody, please help!

"Help! Please, somebody, help!"

Julia Eie shares with us, "I looked out the window at the orchard, dark and shadowy in the pale moonlight.

It was a woman's voice. Close. But where?

My son was at a friend's house. It couldn't be him watching a scary show on TV.

I lived in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, at the time, renting a garage apartment set back from our landlord's house.

The orchard and a small creek were behind us, not much else. Maybe someone fell in the water. Or was lost.

"Help! Please, somebody, help!"

There it was again! A woman, desperate and very near.

I grabbed the phone and called the police. 'I think a woman is being attacked,' I told the dispatcher. I gave my address. 'Please hurry!"

I waited. The shouts continued. I called the police again.

'We sent an officer already,' the dispatcher said. 'He didn't find anything unusual. But I can send him back, I suppose.'

Had I imagined the voice? No. There it was again. The police should have found her by now.

I called one more time. 'Where are you?' I asked.

This time the dispatcher put me through to an officer.

'Ma'am,' he said, cutting me off, 'we went out there. There were no screams. No sign of anything. Stop calling, or we'll file a complaint against you.'

I hung up. I knew I wasn't hearing things. I need to look myself, I thought.

I got in my car and drove to the orchard, my window rolled down. Every time I thought I was close, the shouts got further away.

I passed the orchard and drove on. A quarter mile. Half a mile. A mile.

Then I saw a faint glow ahead. I drove toward it.

There, on a barren stretch of road, was a car, wedged into a steep ditch. Standing next to it was a teenage girl, crying.

'My boyfriend is stuck inside,' she said. 'Please, help us.'

I called the police and told them exactly where to go. Within minutes, two squad cars and an ambulance arrived.

I told you I heard someone shouting,' I said to one of the officers.

'So you're the one,' the officer said. 'Do you see where we are, lady? There's no way you could have heard her from inside your house. We're almost three miles away."

Julia Eie, of Yakima /Washington, tells us this in the GUIDEPOSTS December 2013 addition

God is amazing, isn't He?

(Used by permission)

Let’s pray:

Father, when we hear someone's cry for help, may we be quick to go to their aid, whether across the room, or across town.

May we become sensitive to other's needs so we can be their helper in their time of despair.

Give us sure direction for answering their plea for help. We ask this in the Name of Jesus. Amen

“Thank You for the privilege we have to serve You by serving others, Lord. Help us to be content to fill the place where you have put us, so that You might be glorified through us." Our Daily Bread 6/21/13

Today’s Bible verse: Eph. 3:20 "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us."

Today’s quote: Mary Southerland - "Ask a trusted friend to hold you accountable in each area where you want to improve, grow, or achieve. Choose a friend from whom you can easily take criticism – a friend who will lovingly push you a little when you aren't following through on your goals.

When we involve others, we tend to feel a greater sense of responsibility and accountability. Run your plans and goals past other people. You don't want to do this with every goal or at every step along the way, but involving others with big and important plans is a great idea, especially if those plans impact other people."

Some thoughts today: Offer your services, but don't question why you're not used in that particular ministry. Your ability may be more useful in another one.

- God is God. We have to trust His judgment in what we get to do for Him.

- We have the responsibility for ourselves, what makes us happy. Our willingness to guard what we see, hear, and where we go, will make a large difference in our "happiness".

OUT OF THE DARKNESS AND INTO THE LIGHT

Mary Southerland- Children are wonderfully different.

When our son Jered was nine months old, he began to pull up on every piece of furniture he could find. He maneuvered his way around our home until the day he took his first step … alone. It was a step of inches, but we celebrated as if he had run a marathon.

COMING OUT OF THE DARK PART 2

“I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.”  (Isaiah 45:3)

Mary Southerland on Crosswalk.com      info@girlfriendsingod.com
www.girlfriendsingod.com

Children are wonderfully different. When our son, Jered, was nine months old, he began to pull up on every piece of furniture he could find. For weeks, he maneuvered his way around our home until the day he took his first step alone. It was a step of inches, but we celebrated as if he had completed a marathon. On the other hand, our daughter, Danna, had a different plan. She never pulled up on a piece of furniture and never took “a” step. When she was ten months old, Danna stood up, looked around and trotted across the room. Jered and Danna both walk extremely well today as young adults, but they both began with tiny steps and in their own way.

Nobody gets depressed overnight and nobody overcomes depression overnight. The journey out of the pit is a process of steps uniquely planned by your Father. Let’s look at some of the steps we must take in order to find our way out of the dark.

            (1)  Wait.  The psalmist simply says, ’I waited.’ Waiting is not passive. Waiting is a time of preparation, a time of rest and healing, a time when God covers us with the shadow of His wing. To wait means to accept the pit.

Isaiah 45:3 is a compelling verse. ..Any time the word, LORD is capitalized, it means ‘Father’ or ‘Dearest Daddy.’ This verse indicates that our Father has gone before us and, in every dark moment or painful circumstance, has buried a treasure or stored a secret. The only way we can find the treasure or learn the secret is to pass through that darkness. Some things cannot be learned in the light. The pit of depression has become a hedge of protection in my life, a warning light that something is wrong or out of balance. To wait means to accept the pit, knowing it is for our good. To wait means to admit there is a problem.  Isaiah 40:29  ‘He gives power to the tired and worn out, and strength to the weak.’

We must be willing to admit we are struggling, but pride often prevents us from doing so. Emotional health begins at the point of emotional integrity, being willing to say “I need help!” and being honest with ourselves and with others. When clinical depression first overwhelmed my life, my husband, Dan, was the pastor of a large, fast-growing church in South Florida. We could choose to be transparent and real or we could sweep my struggle under the rug. We concluded that to be right, we had to be real. Dan and I shared my battle with the staff, the deacons and then with the entire church.  Yes, we took a risk but learned an important lesson in doing so. A shared load is a lighter load because we were created to need each other.

To wait means to be still. ‘I waited.’ To wait means to hope in and look for someone or something who will rescue us.

So much about God can never be known on the run. We can get so wrapped up in everyday life that we fail to be wrapped up in Him. The busier we are, the more stillness and rest we need. During those two years in the pit, I not only gave up every role of leadership in church, I could not even attend church at times because of panic attacks. The Father taught me an important truth. He is more concerned with who I am than what I do.

(2) Cry out for help.  Psalm 40:1 “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.”

People struggling with depression often look for help in the wrong places. Let me share with you some of the right places. God, Your Father stands waiting to hear your voice; and when you cry out to Him, He comes running – through His Word, through prayer and through His people. There was a terrible storm and the little girl was afraid. When she cried out in fear, her father came running down the hall, into the bedroom and scooped her up in his arms as he said, ‘Honey, God will take care of you.’ The tearful child replied, ‘I know God loves me and will take care of me but right now, I need somebody with skin on.’ If you cry out to God, He will come to you in some way.

Doctors and counselors. Proverbs 15:22 gives us an important truth when it says, Plans go wrong with too few counselors; many counselors bring success.’  I encourage anyone experiencing depression to get a physical because depression is often rooted in a physical problem, requiring medication. The medication does not eliminate the depression but simply levels the playing field so whatever is triggering the depression can be addressed. Christian counselors are a gift from God. He knew we would need them.

Others. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 instructs us to ‘encourage each other and give each other strength.’ I would never have survived the pit of clinical depression without the help and encouragement of family and friends. Members of our church brought meals, cleaned house and helped take care of our kids.  The deacons were guardian angels at church and other women took my place in leadership. I would still be in that pit if it were not for these people who helped rescue me. Has it affected their opinion of me? Yes! It has shown them that I am just like them and has given them permission to face their own weaknesses. You may be thinking, ‘I have no one in my life that will help me.’ If you cry out to God, He will bring you help.”   (More in another post: Part 3 of Coming Out of the Dark 1/29/12

#30 Reigning in Life

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: Throne life, by prevailing intercession, is but one aspect of your reigning in life.

"How much more will those who receive God's
abundant provision of grace and of the gift
of righteousness reign in life through the one
     man, Jesus Christ" (Rom. 5:17).

When does this reign in life occur? Obviously, by the grace of Jesus Christ we are to reign now. Its ultimate fullness will be in eternity. Christ's abundance not only provides abundant life now, but our reigning in life.

Vine comments, "That we are to reign in life involves
much more than participation in eternal life; it
indicates the activity of life in fellowship with Christ
in His kingdom. There is stress on the word 'reign.' "

This throne life, comments another, is "a life divinely
owned and legally secured, 'reigning' in exalted
freedom and unbiased might through that other
     matchless 'One,' Jesus Christ."

Reigning in life certainly includes our being free from the dominion of sin and being more than conquerors through Christ (Rom. 8:37).

It includes being equipped 'with everything good for doing his will' (Heb. 13:21). It includes overcoming evil with good (Rom. 12:21). and having a faith that overcomes the world (1 John 5:4). It certainly includes sharing Christ's throne as a royal priest unto God (1 Peter 2:9).

All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Jesus (Matt. 28:18). Because of His universal authority you ask whatever you will in His name and are assured of God's answer.

Only because of His authority can you prevail in prayer or dare to face Satan in prayer warfare."

#30 Reigning in  Life
by Dr. Wesley L. Duewel

Father, knowing that Satan is determined to undermine our efforts to pray, may we become tenacious in our making prayer time a regularity.
If we're to be free from sin and victorious in our efforts for the kingdom, we simply must be faithful to pray!
Having overcoming faith depends upon our prayer time with the Lord, to receive His directions and grace.
I ask for the abundant life that is found in Jesus. I pray in His name, to have His will accomplished in my life. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 36:28 "And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long."

Today’s quotes: "The future God has promised us enables us to see all of life in new dimensions. While this may be a great life, the best life is still to come. It is a wonderful privilege to live here in the light of there." Joe Stowell

"Living for the future puts today in perspective"
(ODB 3/22/16)

~ "Believe me when I say that praying is the last thing Satan wants you to do. He will discourage you from doing it. He will dissuade you from it, and he will disarm you by putting a distaste for prayer in your mouth. He wants to see you passionless, prayerless, and powerless. Perfectly quiet. And because prayer is the divinely ordained mechanism that leads you into the power and victory of Christ, Satan knows you’ll remain defeated and undone without it." Priscilla Shirer (from her message: Don't Underestimate the  Power of Prayer)

Our thought today: The object of our hope matters. Christ is our hope! Fix your eyes on Him! He cleanses us from all unrighteousness when we repent. He can erase our fears and doubts. We can turn to Him for help.

Our question today: So why is it we continue to grope in the darkness, not responding to the Lord Jesus?  Are you going to ask Him for help? He waits...
