Conscience

James H. CagleThe word conscience and consciences are found 32 times in the Bible, in which the states and functions of the conscience are revealed.

The conscience is a spiritual organ used as a point of reference, a present guide to conduct, an immediate standard of perfection and holiness (Heb. 9: 9), (Christ is our ultimate standard) monitoring our morals and voicing a warning when we so much as think of doing something contrary to the values or convictions we’ve agreed upon.

Conscience says "do right," but doesn’t tell us what right is— that we find in God’s Word, which is objective and universal and absolute.

The conscience has no power to force us to behave by its standard; it only sounds an alarm when we’re about to intrude into a forbidden area.

The conscience is normally silent, but when activated we must take heed in order to maintain our integrity.

The conscience can be raised, never lowered, and only ignored. What’s put on the conscience can’t be erased. If we ignore it, we soon defile it until we’ve a "seared conscience" and soon after a "reprobate mind."

The conscience is the immediate judge of our mental and physical acts. It censures our thought life and practical life. It holds the standard that judges their morality.

It warns us when a wrong act is yet mental, before it becomes physical. It judges sin when it’s first born in our imagination, before we actually commit it. What good is a conscience that warns us after the fact?

But when Truth becomes subjective rather than objective, as it has in America, the conscience loses its point of reference, the Bible, and then everyone does what’s "right in their own eyes."

The fact that man has a conscience is not an accident. It’s a marvelous gift from our Creator. When educated by the Bible and allowed to function properly it is a great aid for living a godly life.

The Truth and the conscience are ignored in Romans 1: 21-32, as men follow their imagination and debased God. Their wrong thoughts about God corrupted them, as "low thoughts about God corrupt everyone that holds them."

America is going this same way. Returning to the God of the Bible, repenting of our sins, thereby purifying our conscience and submitting to the authority of the Word of God is the only thing that will save us.

Today's Bible verse:  Deu. 10:20 "Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name:"

Today's praise verse: Ps. 91:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."

Father, because conscience says "do right," but doesn’t tell us what right is—we can find can what is objective and universal and absolute in God’s Word! What a privilege to be able to know
You through Your Word, and to have You give us understanding how we can please You!

May I be diligent in my studies of Your Word, so I can bring others into a better relationship with You, to enable them to develop clear consciences. I ask this in the powerful Name of Jesus. Amen.

       Attitude

"As I learn about what God wants from me, I am discovering that attitude is everything.  It isn't that He expects perfection from us but He wants us to keep trying our very best at all times.  When we fail, and He knows that we will, He wants us to apologize and keep trying to do better.  When we fall short of living as He taught us, He wants us to learn, to figure out why we made that mistake and try not to do it again.

God wants us to believe in Him, to love one another and to live upright, moral lives. We can only be perfect when we reach heaven. Our lives are our education preparing us for eternity. We will get an A from Him when we truly try our best."

Today’s quote:  Bill Crowder - "Only Christ offers us true transformation—not just a face lift or an outward adjustment. Paul said that those who have been raised to eternal life in Christ..

"have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge                 according to the image of Him who created him: (Col. 3:19).

New! What a tremendous word full of hope! Christ transforms us into new people in Him—people with anew heart, not just fixed up to look good on the outside.

The Spirit develops in us the clear image of Christ."

Some thoughts today: If you live in chaos, there will come changes through praying about it and asking God to intervene.

- Remember, the prayers of previous generations surround us, and help to keep us in our walk with God.

- When we've experienced rejection, Satan will introduce various ways to "deal" with it, such as drugs, alcohol, sex, pornography, & etc.
