Humble Before God

1 Corinthians 1:22-23
Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles...

Michael Brooks: The Jews were embarrassed concerning the cross, as they wanted a leader who would free them from bondage and the oppression of Rome.

A crucified Christ was an insult. It meant defeat not victory. That's why Jesus is called a stumbling block.

Someone once described philosophy as a blind man in a dark room trying to find a black cat that isn't there. (I have always wondered: What would a dark room or a black cat mean to a blind man?)

Placing that question aside, today's man is a lot like the Greeks. He too is still searching for some sort of theory or formula, perhaps through science, that will give him the answers to life's questions.

In our passage today, Paul is not just talking about Jews and Greeks; he's describing all people, both religious and non-religious.

He places them in two broad categories: those with some belief in the possibility or probability of God who want a miracle to prove the authenticity of the Gospel; and the others who try to reason out the questions of life and death with human intellect alone.

Neither approach works or is acceptable to God. People must first humble themselves before God to receive by faith the message of the Gospel.

Questions to Ponder:

Are you struggling to find your way back into a relationship with the Lord? Have you fallen away? He is waiting. Put away pride. Fall to your knees. Neither intellect nor religious ritual is what He desires.

Father,
My desire is to always
want my life to prove Your
Reality. May what I do, say, and think bring You
glory, and peace to me.When others question Who
You are, may they soon find the answers that brings
satisfaction, as they search Your Word, the Bible
for themselves. Keep my heart in a good relationship
with You, so others will be drawn to You.
In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse:  John 14:12-14 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Today’s quotes: C. S. Lovett - "With marriage at the center of life as we know it, it follows that it is also the central laboratory for making us like Christ. Here we find all the ingredients for Christlikeness. It is a complete lab with all of the stresses and trials, pressures and possibilities packaged under one roof.

Everything needed to reproduce God's personality in us can be found in our homes. Marriage is a home-study course, and earthly rehearsal for the golden wedding to come." (Taken from his book: Unequally Yoked Wives, pg 14)

Linda W. Rooks - "The power for change comes through our humility before God and one another. We cannot make it happen. Only God can '[His] power is made perfect in [our] weakness'
(2 Cor. 12:9). When we humble ourselves before God and relinquish the desire to be in control, we unleash his mighty power into our marriages to affect the changes we long for.

Lord, I surrender all my self-righteousness, my pride, my
desire to be in control. I give it all to you, Lord. I want my
desires to conform to yours. Open the doors of my mind to
your will. Loosen the tight places of my heart." (Taken
   from her book,
Broken Heart on Hold pgs. 131, 132).

Some thoughts today:  It may well be that we'll need "to be stripped" in order for God to get our attention, so He can change us. Trust Him!

- You are at this moment, what God's been building in you through the various seasons you've come through. Do you understand that God's grace has been with you, and that He'll breathe fresh Life into you when you turn to Him and ask Him to?

- Your past and present can be woven into a beautiful tapestry. Don't let your past be something you carry the rest of your life. Learn from it and give it to God, so He can use your experience to minister to others of how He helped you.
