#79 Suggestions Regarding Your Prayer Time

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel-  1. Begin your prayer Time joyfully. Normally you should enter the Lord's presence with thanksgiving (Ps. 100:4). You may often feel deeply burdened as you continue week after week to seek to prepare the way of the Lord in harvest and revival, but don't neglect joyous prayer.

    2. Be sensitive to the mood of the Holy Spirit. Remember that the Holy Spirit is a Person who indwells you, loves you, and desires to pray through you. It becomes physically exhausting to maintain any one emotional state for a prolonged period of time unless you have some change. (Google image, Happy person praying)

The Holy Spirit weeps and groans under the burden of prayer (Rom. 8:26-27), but this does not necessarily mean that you will do so. As the Spirit prays through you, His mood at times may be one of burden; at other times, of joy.

When praying Hyde, mighty prayer warrior of the Presbyterian missionary work in India, carried heavy prayer burdens before some of the great Sialkot Conventions, he prayed with great spiritual intensity for hours and even days. Often, however, in the midst of weeping under the weight of prayer concern, the Holy Spirit would impress on him one of God's promises, and he would begin to sing and praise the Lord and  laugh for joy!

    3. Allow God's Word to speak to you.  You may be reminded of some special passage or promise which will nourish your faith. The best plan, however, is to read the Bible through consecutively and regularly. All of God's Word is filled with blessing. Base your life on the whole of God's Word, not just favorite passages. You will often find that the very blessing you need is found in the portion you come to that day.

    4. Use hymns and choruses in prayer.  A verse of a hymn or a chorus may come to mind during your prayer. Quote it, sing it silently, or, if you are alone and desire to do do, sing aloud. The words may express the very hunger of your soul, the faith by which you seek God. Many people find blessing in keeping a hymnal at their place of prayer.

     5. Pray with pencil and paper nearby.  If other unrelated prayer needs come to your mind during your special time of prayer for harvest and revival, jot them down so you will not forget them. If the needs are somewhat related to your main prayer concern, you may feel led to move right into praying for them too, and then back to your general topic.

God may bring to your mind steps of obedience you should take in helping answer your prayers. Make a brief note to remind you later. Perhaps there are letters you should write, of people you should help in some way. After you have noted on paper these suggestions God gives you, go back to your main prayer concern. Don't be diverted from your priority prayer burden.

   6. Be very sensitive to any obedience which will strengthen love and unity.  A mighty work of the Spirit has often been strengthened or begun when someone obeys God's prompting in prayer and seeks for forgiveness for some wrong committed (Matt. 5:23-24). On the other hand, when interpersonal conflict is present and you do not obey this Scripture, it can block the answers to your prayers.

(Note: The question is not who is in the wrong, or who is most in the wrong. If you know that someone feels strained toward you, negative toward you, or wounded by you, this exhortation is your direct command from the Lord. Your prayer can be blocked until you obey the message of Matthew 5:23 -24. But once you have humbly obeyed, your prayer channel is clear, regardless of how the other person does or does not respond.

   7. Close your prayer time with thanksgiving.  The Lord's Prayer begins and ends with praise. Some of the "Hallelujah Psalms" do the same. When you have completed your prayer, tell the Lord again how much you love Him. Rejoice in His goodness and in His promises and go your way, knowing that God has heard your prayers and that you have contributed to preparing the way of the Lord.

Let's pray-

"Loving Father, thank You for being my Shepherd and Guide. Help me to trust you and rest in Your wisdom, allowing Your Spirit to guide me through the challenging moments of  life." (ODB 6/1/2020)

Today's Bible verses-

Isaiah 41:10  “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Psalm 56:3 “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."

Philippians 4:6-7  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Quote for today-

~ Sheridan Voysey- "Our capable Surgeon has mended our heart (Psalm 103:3). So when fear depression, or condemnation come, perhaps we too should address our souls and say: March on! Be strong! Feeble heart, beat again."

Words of wisdom-

We can choose to listen to Christ's gentle voice of assurance of His presence over the loud negative voices blaring in our ears from the culture around us. It will take a commitment on our part to listen to the whispers of Jesus. Let Him assure your spirit when you become fearful or troubled.

Max Lucado- "Equipped with the right tools, we can learn to listen to God. What are those tools? Here are the ones I have found helpful.
A regular time and place. Select a slot on your schedule and a corner of your world, and claim it for God. For some it may be best to do this in the morning. Others prefer the evening. Others prefer many encounters during the day."
