#111 Male Leaders and Female Intercessors

C. Peter Wagner tells
us: For some, female
intercessors for male
leaders works well.

I have mentioned that
I believe two of Paul's
intercessors were Euodia
and Syntyche, both women.

#12  Paul's Prayer Partners: Enodia and Syntyche

Having somewhat less evidence, I nevertheless suspect, as I have mentioned earlier, that Mary, the mother of John Mark, could have been one of Peter's closest intercessors.

To cause physical dependency, the enemy uses lust, inappropriate language and inappropriate contact.

In order to avoid any of this, common sense is needed. For one thing, the pastor mush have a solid marriage as a prerequisite for relating to an I-1 intercessor of the opposite sex.

There must be an open relationship between the spouses as well. The danger of physical indiscretion should be mutually recognized and assiduously avoided.

Cindy Jacobs says,

'Do not meet with a member of the opposite sex for prayer without someone else being present.'

I go so far as to say the less one-on-one contact there is between a leader and a member of the opposite sex in general the better.

Having breakfast or lunch or driving from one place to another with a female intercessor is not recommended.

I was concerned, when I developed these rules for myself years ago, that I might be overly old-fashioned.

But I was heartened
by my friend Pastor
Rick Warren of Saddleback
valley Community church.

He is a megachurch pastor in his 30's who has never been accused of being 'old-fashioned.'

After the Jimmy Swaggart scandal broke, he laid down for his staff  'Saddleback's Ten Commandments.'

  1. Thou shalt not visit the opposite sex alone at home.
  2. Thou shalt not counsel the opposite sex alone at the
      office.
  3. Thou shalt not counsel the opposite sex more than
      once without that person's mate.
  4. Thou shalt not go to lunch alone with the opposite sex.
  5. Thou shalt not kiss any attender of the opposite sex or
show affection that could be questioned.
  6. Thou shalt not discuss detailed sexual problems with
      the opposite sex in counseling.
  7. Thou shalt not discuss your marriage problems with an
       attender of the opposite six.
  8. Thou shalt be careful in answering cards and letters
       from the opposite sex.
  9. Thou shalt make your secretary your protective ally.
10. Thou shalt pray for the integrity of other staff
       members.

I have written out Rick Warren's rules in full because I think following them could avoid many of the problems we are having in the ministry today.

I agree with them and I follow them myself. Not only do I want to avoid pitfalls such as physical dependence, I also want to avoid the appearance of evil.

Recognize the Role of the intercessor
Both the leader and the intercessor should recognize that the role of the intercessor is:
  • A close personal relationship, but not marriage
  • A Strong influence in the life of the leader, but not manipulation or control
  • Partnership in ministry, but not ownership of ministry."

Let’s pray:

Father, I see that I need
to be more mindful of what
I do, and to remember that
it will have effect on others
around me.

   May my actions and word
be all You want them to be.

Help me to always protect the folks I am with, to not allow any actions offend them, or anyone observing my conduct.

I choose to maintain clean hands and a pure heart at all times.

I pray that my behavior pleases You, dear Jesus. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse:  Neh. 5:9 "Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?"

Today’s quote: Bill Crowder – “It is only from God that we can receive the grace of forgiveness when our choices have produced painful regrets. And only in Him do we find the wisdom to make better choices.”

Some thoughts today: Jesus always saw a need as an opportunity. He still does! He sees your need, as well as those around you. You have a privilege of allowing Him to use you to minister to others. As He is spirit, He needs flesh to touch someone...

- God needs ordinary gifts to multiply. What's in your
hand? Give it to Him. He'll use your "something" to do
miracles. 1 Kings 17:8-16 (widow with flour and oil,
struggling to survive, but shared, and God provided!)

- We do the natural, and God does the supernatural. Impact will be beyond your imagination. We look back and see what God has done because of our sacrifices.

#110 Physical Dependency

C. Peter Wagner has said,
"I have said enough about
immorality in the ministry
to give us the impression it
has become one of Satan's
most effective tools in
crippling the church in our
day and age.

It should come as no surprise to suggest that Satan would like to destroy relationships between pastors and intercessors through an inappropriate physical contact.

Most cases of pastoral indiscretion have been sparked in the counseling relationship, contacts with staff members taking second place.

I have not as yet heard of immoral physical relationships between pastors and intercessors, although I do know of one pastor's I1 intercessor running off with the pastor's father.

Inappropriate contact is a constant danger that needs to be understood and avoided.

Research shows that the great majority of pastors are male and great majority of intercessors are female. This situation is not likely to change in the near future.

To avoid the danger of wrong contacts totally, some pastors such as John Maxwell only relate to male prayer partners.

This is not that either John or his wife, Margaret, have any kind of excessive phobia about John's relating to women in the general course of his pastoral ministry. He relates as well as any.

{John relates His stronger strengths are to teach men, so he teaches them to pray for him and his ministry.}

Furthermore, John has rightly observed that in the average congregation women pray much more than men.

In his congregation he wants as many men praying as women, so he directs his attention toward motivating and training men to pray.

John Maxwell does not teach that all pastors should have the same policy he has, but it goes without saying, many pastors should follow his example. Or they should recruit family members as intercessors."

Let’s pray:

   Father, when I pray for
my pastor(s) and leaders, may
I remember that they are human,
like me, and to make sure I
don't do anything to cause
anyone to speak against my
behavior, or theirs.

   I understand that I'm
responsible to always to be
careful and respectful, and to make sure I am appropriately handling myself in their presence.

I want to be an excellent prayer partner for my leaders, and I ask that You help me be one who knows what You require.

In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Is. 29:24 "They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine."

Today’s quote: Dennis Fisher – “Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can now approach God without fear. God’s penalty for sin has been satisfied, and we are invited into God’s presence: 'Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace” Heb. 4:16.

Our thought today: The glory of God is the love of God flowing through us. This love of God isn't stopped by imperfection. Can we love imperfect people in our churches? Remember, we weren't "perfect" when God arrested our thinking, and revealed His love to us!

My Cooking Will Be Grand

My Cooking Will Be Grand
Debbie McEwen

Will we eat in heaven?
I'd like to think we might
I'd love to share a meal
With everyone in sight.

I'd cook my favorite dishes
And fix them oh so well
To please all of my family
And everyone else as well.

Heaven's such a perfect place
With joyful prayers and song
That I would like to add
Happy fuel for everyone.

I would humbly offer
My cooking to my God
I'd like to think if I do my best
My efforts He would laud.

I've never been a perfect cook
Or perfect anything
But I believe that God is pleased
When we do our best for Him.

So I guess that I must practice
To be the best I can
So when I go to heaven
My cooking will be grand.

Let’s pray:

Father, I ask that You guide my efforts to serve You and others by with my talents.
The abilities come from You, and I'll do my best to work with them for the Kingdom.

We know You have good plans for us, and we thank You for them.
Have Your way in my life, Lord. Help me be sensitive to what You're showing me to do for others.
I'll look to Your enablement in my being a blessing. In Jesus' Name, I pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 32:8 "I Will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.."

Today’s quote:  Our Daily Bread: “Lord, help me remember that there are no small places or small people. All are precious in Your sight. May I see the value of my work and cherish it as You do. Anyone doing God’s work in God’s way is important in His sight." 7/20/14

Some thoughts today: Learn your lessons well, so you can help others in the things of God.

- God approves of you! He has affirmed you. He is pleased in what you've done. Do you have many choices to chose from? God will help you, if you'll let Him.

That you are called to serve Him and to impact the lives of people around you through prayer, giving, serving, and sowing. And that nothing and no one can stop you from walking out His kingdom will for your life.
Wake up and remind yourself that your labor in the Lord matters – that He sees your love, your sacrifice, and your patience toward all men, and especially toward the saints, and that He will not forget your work and labor of love.”

I sat on the balcony one morning and watched as a maintenance man for the resort approached a palm tree and pulled a brown, life-less branch from under the green leaves.

Oddly, before he pulled the dead branch, I hadn’t even noticed it was there. After he pulled it, however, I noticed that the palm tree looked fresh and vibrant. Healthy. The pruning made such a difference!"

I Didn't Quit!

I Didn’t Quit  by  James Cagle

I didn’t quit
When my cross became so heavy
And there were no stars in the sky
When my path was rough and rocky
And God gave no answer to my question "Why?"

I didn’t quit

When the winds ripped my sails to shreds
And my ship was battered upon the sea
When all looked hopeless in the storm
But in spite of it all I chose to believe.

I didn’t quit

When my fam’ly and friends forsook me
And I was suddenly all alone
When my path got steep and thorny
And tomorrow wasn’t fore-shown.

I didn’t quit

When the one avowed to me for life
Released my hand and walked away.
When promises made were not kept
And the enemy mocked me along life’s way.

I didn’t quit

When all the lies began to be told
And I was wrongfully defamed
When my name became a by-word
And my enemies were never named.

I didn’t quit

When I was introduced to cancer
And my life spun out of control
And it seemed I was losing the battle
And fear and pain commanded my soul.

I didn’t quit

When I lost ev’rything that I held dear
And I no longer felt like living
When all I had slipped through my fingers
And I felt my mind start darkening.

I didn’t quit

When my heart fin’ly broke in two
And up ahead the way looked so hard
And I knew if I rose again tomorrow
My pain and sorrow I must disregard.

I didn’t quit

While in the furnace of affliction
For I knew the fiery trial refined me
That pain and sorrow are the tools
God uses to work a change in me.

I didn’t quit

Because others were watching me
And Jesus Christ was counting on me
And I knew I could make a difference
That would matter for eternity.

I didn’t quit

Because faith kept leading me on
When all looked hopeless I had hope
I knew quitting would mean defeat
So I never set foot on that slip’ry slope.

I didn’t quit

Because I firmly believed
That God is always true to His Word
That He will give me a song in the night
And He ordained ev’rything that occurred.

I didn’t quit

Because I knew down deep in my heart
God has a purpose for ev’ry trial
A reason for the pain and heartache
And trust in Christ made them effectual.

I didn’t quit

For I knew all things come through Christ
Each pain and heartache He designed for me
And with His Word He guided me
And His work of grace was real to me.

I didn’t quit

Because the Spirit of Christ dwells within
And greater is He that is in me
Than he that is in the world
And He is the One the world needs to see.

I didn’t quit

Because I never quit reading God’s Word.
Through pain and sorrow I continued to feed
And I believed ev’ry word I would read
And therefore the enemy did not succeed.

I didn’t quit

For these temporal light afflictions
Will win me a crown on Judgment Day
And that crown I’ll cast at Jesus’ feet
For sustaining me as I continued God’s way."

Let’s pray:

   Father, there have been
hard times, and I want to
thank You for guiding me
through each of them.

May I not forget that You
desire to help me go through each trial.

Help me to not quit any particular struggle, and to keep
faith in Your ability to oversee the circumstances.

I want to remain strong and able to learn from them quickly.

I ask for Your grace, to honor You in everything I do, say, and think. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 5:11 "But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice; let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them that love thy name be joyful in thee."

Today’s quote: Dave Egner – “We may face sorrow, pain, and hardship, but we don’t have to sink into self-pity. The same God who allows our suffering also showers us with His compassion Lam. 3:32. With God’s love lifting us up, we can – if we have to – ‘play’ in pain.”

Some thoughts today: Let the love in you reach out to hurting people. God wants to use you in saving lives, so ask for the courage to do it.

- People need to know they can trust you. Your sharing your story with them helps them connect with you as nothing else can.

- Pray for someone where they are, for God to touch them and bring healing. God wants to use you to minister to someone at the point of their need.
