THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS PART 2

“The LORD said to me again, ‘Go, show your love to a woman loved by someone else, who has been unfaithful to you. In the same way the LORD loves the people of Israel, even though they worship other gods and love to eat the raisin cakes.’ So I bought her for six ounces of silver and ten bushels of barley. Then I told her, ‘You must wait for me for many days. You must not be a prostitute, and you must not have sexual relations with any other man. I will act the same way toward you.’ In the same way Israel will live many days without a king or leader, without sacrifices or holy stone pillars, and without the holy vest or an idol. After this, the people of Israel will return to the LORD their God and follow him and the king from David's family. In the last days, they will turn in fear to the LORD, and he will bless them” (Hosea 3:1-5, NCV).

“Friend to Friend

True forgiveness always requires sacrifice on our part – a truth that may often seem unfair in human terms. After all, we are the ones who have been hurt. Why should we have to sacrifice anything? Shouldn’t the people who hurt us be the ones who have to make the first move and offer the biggest sacrifice? True forgiveness – God’s forgiveness – defies human logic and cannot be explained in human terms. Human forgiveness is easier but a shallow substitute and cheap imitation for the amazing power of God’s forgiveness.

Hosea was married to a woman who hurt and humiliated him. Scripture does not say Gomer ever repented and asked for Hosea’s forgiveness. But that did not stop Hosea from forgiving her. In fact, Hosea sacrificed his pride and his human rights in order to forgive Gomer. Hosea’s forgiveness also required a financial sacrifice.

            ·         Hosea had to sacrifice materially.

Hosea had to buy back his own wife. Seriously? Gomer was damaged goods and she definitely was not on sale. The price was substantial. Six ounces of silver and ten bushels of barley was the going price of a slave and since prophets are definitely not in the top income bracket, the payment was a great financial sacrifice for Hosea. Gomer’s own sin had placed her in bondage. Even so, Hosea was willing to make a financial sacrifice in order to fulfill his commitment in marriage. Love that never gives up is willing to pay a price, to sacrifice so people in bondage can be set free.

Mother Teresa said, ‘Love, to be real must cost. It must hurt. It must empty us of self!”’ The words of King David reveal the essence of love and forgiveness. No, I must pay the full price. I won't give an offering that costs me nothing’ (1 Chronicles 21:24, ICB).

Hosea could have played it safe. Nowhere in Scripture does it suggest Gomer wanted his forgiveness, and Hosea had no guarantee she would not do the very same thing again. He took a huge risk in bringing Gomer home. What passes for true love is often little more than a convenient emotional arrangement. Someone is kind to us so we are kind in return. Someone treats us badly, so we don’t get mad, we get even. Sound fair? Seem reasonable? Yes, but only in human terms. Love that never fails goes beyond reason and refuses to settle for justice alone but insists on granting mercy.

I love the story of a doctor who told the little boy that he could save his sister’s life by giving her some of his blood. ‘Johnny, are you sure you want to give your blood for Mary?’ the doctor asked. The boy hesitated for several moments; his lips trembled as tears filled his eyes. His parents and the doctor assured Johnny that the procedure would not be very painful and would be over with quickly. Finally, he smiled bravely and said, ‘Sure Doc. I’ll give my blood for my sister.’ As the transfusion took place, the little girl began to respond immediately. Parents, doctors and nurses erupted into cheers and applause. When the ordeal was almost over, Johnny’s brave little voice was heard, ‘Hey, Doc, when do I die?’ A stunned silence fell across the room. The doctor and parents suddenly realized what Johnny was thinking. Johnny thought when he gave his blood to his sister, he would die – a very high price he was willing to pay.

Love that never fails is willing to pay a great price and make a great sacrifice. Love that never fails is yours to receive and yours to give.

Let’s Pray

Father, I come to You today, asking first for Your forgiveness for the sin in my life. I choose to turn from that sin and obey you. Thank You for your grace and mercy. Give me the strength and power to extend that same mercy and grace to those in my life who have hurt me.  In Jesus’ name,  Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

What hurt or pain are your holding in your heart and life? Realize it is holding you prisoner and make the choice to let it go today. Forgive the person who hurt you. Forgiveness is a choice that leads to a step of obedience. Forgiveness is not an emotion or feeling. If you make the choice to forgive, God will supply the forgiveness.

THE POWER OF FORGIVENESS PART 1

The LORD said to me again, ‘Go, show your love to a woman loved by someone else, who has been unfaithful to you. In the last days, they will turn in fear to the LORD, and he will bless them Hosea 3:1-5, NCV.

"Friend to Friend

True love is strong, unconditional – God’s love – a love that we cannot understand or explain in human terms. The life of the Old Testament prophet, Hosea, powerfully illustrates this kind of love. Hosea was married to Gomer and together they had three children. Gomer was unfaithful to Hosea, betraying the covenant of marriage. Hosea had every right to walk away, but love that never fails calls us up to higher choices that are beyond human reasoning. Supernatural choices demand supernatural action and sacrifice.

So I bought her for six ounces of silver and ten bushels of barley.” (Hosea 3:2 NCV)

Think about it. Hosea was the one who had been wronged and humiliated. Yes, he was the one following God but he was also the one called to sacrifice. We misunderstand the full meaning of sacrifice, thinking it is only a decision to ‘give up’ self-centered rights, hoarded resources or the freedom to walk away. Sacrifice is a mirror reflecting our own pride and sin, calling us to lay down all sense of human justice or fairness in order for God to work in and through us to love others. What sacrifices did God call Hosea to make?

Hosea had to sacrifice his pride.

The phrase ‘Loved by another,’ suggests Gomer was owned by a family friend or fellow citizen.  She may have been sleeping with one or more of Hosea’s friends or, at the very least, one of his neighbors. Hosea had to swallow his pride and go to her in love and forgiveness. Now let me just tell you that if I had been the one going to find Gomer, I would have been more likely to snatch her up by the hair and drag her home in front of as many people as possible to prove she could not get away with what she was doing. Better yet, I would have said, ‘Good riddance. You can keep her!’ I am certain I could find many who would agree with my plan of punishment and revenge. It seems to me that Hosea stood to gain very little but lose a great deal by choosing to respond as he did. Hosea was called on to sacrifice everything to redeem a woman who did not deserve sacrifice or redemption. Jesus did the same thing for us when He died on the cross. He now calls us to respond with that same God-like heart attitude of redemption.

Hosea had to sacrifice his rights.

Gomer broke the covenant of marriage. Don’t miss this pivotal truth. Biblically, Hosea had every justification to divorce Gomer. He could have tossed her out and turned her children against her, stripping her life of every good thing. Hosea could have destroyed Gomer, and no one would have blamed him. Instead, Hosea rose to a higher place when he laid down his anger, hurt and the right to retaliate or seek revenge. It doesn’t stop there.

Hosea took the initiative and went to her. Matthew describes a forgiveness we find hard to understand. ‘So if you are standing before the altar in the Temple, offering a sacrifice to God, and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there beside the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God' (Matthew 5:23, NLT). Notice what this verse says. If we know someone has something against us and we refuse to deal with it, nothing we do or say will count in Kingdom work. God always seeks restoration and reconciliation and commands us to look past what seems like a logical reaction to the highest obedience we can offer.

There is one more very important step in learning to truly forgive. Don’t miss the rest of Hosea and Gomer’s story in Thursday’s devotion.

Let’s Pray

Father, I am so tired of holding on to the pain in my life. I want to forgive those who have hurt me and learn how to let go of the pain and walk on. Today, I lay down my pride and my rights. I will not seek revenge or retaliation. Instead, I choose to love my enemies and bless those who have harmed me. Please give me the strength and power to honor you as I step out in obedience.

            In Jesus’ name,
            Amen.

#51 Your Accountability as a Leader, Part 2

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: We continue our discussion of leaders' responsibility to God and their people.

You will be accountable to practice what you say.

Jesus commanded us not to be like the Pharisees. "They do not practice what they preach" (Matt. 23:3-4). Bishop Ryle comments,
"So long as the world stands, this chapter ought to be a warning and a beacon to all ministers of religion. No sins are so sinful as theirs in the sight of Christ." (Google image, Pastors keep going through hard times)

The Power of the Word of God

R. A. Torrey: The great reservoir of the power that belongs to God is His own Word—the Bible. If we wish to make it ours, we must go to that Book.

Yet people abound in the church who are praying for power and neglecting the Bible. Men are longing to have power for bearing fruit in their own lives and  yet forget that Jesus has said: "The seed is the Word of God" (Luke 8:11).

They are longing to have power to melt the cold heart and break the stubborn will of those to whom they witness, and yet forget that God has said:

"Is not My Word like as a fire?...and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces." (Jer. 33:23:29).

If we are to obtain fullness of power in life and service, we must feed upon the Word of God. There is no other food so strengthening.

If we will not take time to study the Bible, we cannot have power, any more than we can have physical power if we will not take time to eat nutritious food.

God's Word Has Power to Convict of Sin. In Acts 2:37 we read. "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? "

If we look back and see what it was they had heard that produced this deep conviction, we find that it was simply the Word of God. If you will read Peter's sermon, you will find it one of the most biblical sermons ever preached.

It was Scripture from beginning to end. It was, then, the Word of God, carried home by the Spirit of God, that pricked them to the heart.

If you wish to produce conviction, you must give men the word of God.

God's Word Has Power to Regenerate. In James 1:18 we read, "Of His own will begat He us with the Word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures."

In First Peter 1:23 we read, "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

The process of regeneration on our side is the simplest thing in the world. On God's side it is mysterious, but with that we have nothing to do.

The process is this: the human heart is the soil; you and I are sowers. The Word of God is the seed which we drop into the soil.

God's Word Has Power to Produce Faith. "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." (Rom. 10:17). You can never get faith by merely praying, nor can you ever get it  by any effort of the will.

You can never get it by trying to pump it up in any way. Faith is the product of a certain cause, and that cause is the Word of God.

It is so for example with saving faith. If you want a man to have saving faith, simply give him something definite from God's Word upon which he can rest.

The Philippian jailer asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (Acts 16:30), and Paul answered:
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house" (Acts 16:31. But Paul did not stop there.

Read verse 32: "And they spake unto him the Word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house."

They did not merely tell the Philippian jailer to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and then leave him floundering in the dark without giving him something to believe, or something for his faith to rest upon.

They gave that which God has ordained to produce faith.

Our thought today:

The book of Acts is the testimony of Jesus' gifts of the Holy Spirit's leading as the need arrived. The disciples could recognize His moving on Jews and Gentiles alike. There were physical manifestations.

Our question today:

Are we asking/looking for Holy Ghost-lead physical manifestations in our churches today? Why not? Jesus is the same today!

Let's pray-

Father, thank You, that You convict us of sin, as otherwise, we won't know when/how it offends Your holiness.

When I acknowledge my wrong actions, thoughts or words, help me repent and be determined with Your help to forsake them.

I understand that the reading and hearing of Your Word produces faith, so speak to my heart through it, however it comes to me.

May my heart receive Your instructions of conviction and acceptance that makes/keeps me in good relationship with You.

I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Today’s Bible verses:

Ps. 36:9 "For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light."

Ps. 68:11 "The LORD gave the word; great was the company of those that published it."

Today’s quote:

"By putting off a decision for Christ, you not only lose the immediate blessings of a deeply personal relationship with God now; you also risk future separation from Him for all eternity. Don't procrastinate! Some to Christ today: Acknowledge your sin, ask His forgiveness, and trust him as your Savior."

#14 The Power of God Came Upon the People

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: The power of God that came upon people under Finney's ministry was not something due to his presence, but to the presence of the Spirit.

People gripped by God during a service often continued under the awesome hand of the spirit after they returned home. Until they completed their repentance, restitution, and confession they found it practically impossible to go about their normal duties. (Google image, Finney).

#50 What Saith the Scripture?

Samuel Chadwick: The teaching of the Scriptures is the final authority on this subject, as on every other question of faith and life. The teaching of the Bible is for me the last word.

I accept it whether I understand it or not. Faith can wait. It is humbling to have to bear the reproachful pity of those who speak with the confident authority of science and philosophy, learning and psychology, but the yoke of Christ is easy when faith is assured and meekness is content to wait God's time.

The Gift of Forgiveness

Dr. Charles F. Stanley shares with
us about forgiveness in his magazine,
In Touch:

Webster defines gift as "something
given to show friendship, affection,
support, etc."

Using this definition, it seems logical to give gifts only to people we love, not tho those who hurt or abuse us.

Yet Scripture clearly tells us to offer one of the greatest possible gifts—forgiveness—to those who mistreat us.

To forgive means "to give up all claims to punish or exact a penalty for an offense." No strings or conditions can be attached, or else it ceases to be a pardon.

Ephesians 2:8-9 expands on this by contrasting the gift of salvation with works. Neither salvation nor forgiveness can be earned; both must be freely given.

God granted us forgiveness, which we did not deserve and could not earn. And in much the same way, we are to release every offender from any form of penalty.

Unforgiveness is emotional bondage
that consumes minds with memories
of offenses, distorts emotions with
revenge, and fills hearts with churning
unrest.

Its tentacles reach deep into the soul, affecting both spiritual and physical health. But the one who chooses to put on love and offer forgiveness is ready to receive the peace of Christ.

Let God's Word help you release hurt and anger into His caring hands—then watch as vengeful thoughts are transformed into praise and gratitude to the Lord.

Thankfully, the gift of pardon is not something we have to manufacture in ourselves.

This present is wrapped in the love
of God and tied with the red ribbon
of Christ's sacrifice.

It is freely given to us by the Savior, and our job is simply to pass it on to others.

Cross is Removed and Believers Burst Into Tears, Sing a Beautiful Hymn

by Lift the Cross of Jesus!
Something to sing about? They did!

     Father,
I know that Your Word tells me to forgive those who hurt me.

It is in Your ability to enable me to do that, and I ask for the grace to forgive.

I'm willing, but at times, it does seem impossible for me to give the forgiveness You speak of.

Please grant me the grace to trust You to help me forgive others, as you've forgiven me. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 66:16 "Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul."

Today’s quote: Margaret Feinburg – “Unforgiveness holds us back from fully experiencing God's wonder. Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself. Take fifteen minutes to prayerfully consider any things for which you've had a hard time forgiving yourself. Record them on a blank sheet of paper. Then take a few moments to forgive yourself for each one.

After you forgive yourself, rip up the sheet of paper as a sign of keeping no record of wrongs. Allow yourself to celebrate the forgiveness God offers you through Jesus. You are a wondrous child of God! Spend some time thanking God for the way he created you and the redemptive work he's doing in your life, and walk in the wonder of forgiveness.
Wonderstruck

He Giveth More Grace

He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength as our labors increase
To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials He multiplies peace.

Whe we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father's full giving is only begun.

Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.

His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.

Grieve not the Spirit! Be filled with the Spirit! All our duty to the Spirit is included in these two commands. The one is negative, forbidding everything of the flesh or self that would lead to unbelief or disobedience to Christ Jesus. The other is positive, calling us to yield our whole being in surrender to Him who reveals and maintains the life of Christ within us. (Google image, Man worshipping God)

Let’s pray:

Father, I ask that You speak to us, as we read this post today. May it become clear that You love us, and You desire to minister to our souls.

Speak through the scriptures we read, and draw us to Your Heart, to encourage us to step out in faith and believe what has been shared. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Is. 27:5 "Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me."

Today’s quote: Max Lucado – “When you are in the final days of your life, what will you want?  Will you hug that college degree in the walnut frame? Will you ask to be carried to the garage so you can sit in your car? Will you find comfort in rereading your financial statement? Of course not. What will matter then will be people. If relationships will matter most then, shouldn't they matter most now?”

Some thoughts today: God is happy to pursue us, as He wants to redeem and adopt us into His Love.

- God brings all peoples together in Christ Jesus. He has no preferences. He loves us all. Regardless of who we are, or where we find ourselves, or what our background may be, we are invited to come to Him through faith in Christ His Son, Who died and rose again for us all, making a way for our forgiveness and salvation.
