Dutch
Sheets tells us, “Two New Testament
words for watching make the connection to
the Old Testament concept of watchmen:
gregoreuo and agrupneo.
Both mean essentially to stay awake, in the
sense that a
sentry would need to refrain
from sleep. Some of the verses where
they’re found are the following:
they’re found are the following:
- Col.
4:2 “Devote
yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of
thanksgiving.”
- Mark
14:34,38 And
He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain
here and keep watch….Keep watching and praying,; that you may not come
into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
- 1
Peter 5:8
“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls
about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
- 1
Cor. 16:13 “Be
on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”
- Eph.
6:18 “With
all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in
view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the
saints.”
- Luke 21:36 “But keep on the alert at all times, praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
