#91 How Long Must You Persevere?

Dr. Lesley L. Duewel: 1. Persevere in prevailing prayer as long as Christ does. You are chosen to be Christ's prayer partner. He has seated you in the heavenlies beside him on His throne.

You are to join His rule of intercessory grace by joining your prayers with His. He still loves. He still longs. He still intercedes. You dare not give up while He is praying.

(Prayer on knees, Google image)

Don't fail Him by stopping to pray while He is still interceding. As far as Scripture reveals, prayer is Christ's major work today.

"If we then are to have fellowship with Jesus Christ in
    his present work, we must spend much time in prayer;
we must give ourselves to earnest, constant, persistent,
sleepless, overcoming prayer." (Torrey, How to Pray, 14.)

   2. Persevere in prevailing as long as the Holy Spirit gives you desire. Charles Finney taught that whenever you have a desire for the good of another one,

"there is a strong presumption that the Spirit of God is
exiting these very desires, and stirring you up to pray
for that object. (Finney, Principles of Prayer, 26)

A holy concern, desire, or hunger in your heart for the welfare of another person, particularly for their salvation or a similar hunger to see God work in any particular situation, is always an evidence that the Holy Spirit is conveying to you the heartbeat of God.

You can be sure it is the will of God the Father to grant that prayer in accordance with the intercession of the Son and with the infinite desire of the Spirit. Don't become weary. Pray on.

3. Persevere in prevailing as long as Satan keeps resisting and hindering. If what you are praying for is of little importance to Satan, he will give up more easily and concentrate on what is important to him.

But the more strategic a prayer answer is to the kingdom of God, the more Satan will fight to keep you from the answer to your prayer.

Satan fears prayer more than almost anything else we could ever do. Prevailing prayer is potentially the greatest continuing threat to Satan that there has been since Calvary.

Nothing will please him more than to get you to stop or neglect a strategic prayer request. Hold on. If Satan is fighting, your persevering in prayer is worth all that it costs.

Persevere Until

Don't give up at the very time God's answer is nearing, at the very time the angels have almost delivered to you the answer for which you have been praying.

Instead, your prayer then should be strongest. What is the great difference between Luther, Knox, Wesley, Finney, Edwards, Brainerd, Praying Hyde, and a host of other prevailers, and so many who pray causally today?

Those people of God refused to give up till God's answer came,
"Whether we like it or not, asking is the role of the Kingdom,"
said Spurgeon. (Bounds, Purpose in Prayer, 62)

How long were the disciples to tarry in Jerusalem? "Until you have been clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49).

How long did Moses keep his hands raised to God in prayer? Until Amalek was totally defeated (Exod 17:13).

How long did Joshua hold out his javelin toward Ai while the army attacked? Until Jericho was destroyed (Josh. 8:26).

How long did Elijah stay on his knees in prevailing prayer after the three years' drought? Until rain clouds formed in the sky (1 Kings 18:44).

How long did Jesus pray in Gethsemane? Until Satan was defeated. How long did the disciples continue in prayer in the Upper Room? Until the Holy Spirit came upon them.

No matter what our prayer request, if God has led us to pray for a need that we believe is the will of God, how long should we pray? Until the answer comes!

Mighty Prevailing Prayer
#91 How Long Must you Persevere?
by Dr. Wesley L. Duewel
(pp. 156 -158) Zondervan

Your challenge: No matter what your prayer request is, if God has led you to pray for a need that you believe is the will of God, will you be willing to pray until the answer comes?

Let's pray-
Father, knowing that many Christians are praying fervently for Your intervention for protection and provision in Iraq and other places, may we join them in our praying efforts here at home, to keep praying until we see evidence of Your moving on their behalf.
Forgive us for causally praying about anything that You're concerned about! Change us, and place an urgency in each of us to continue praying about our concerns, til we have secured answers that please You, and which enable You to win victories to honor Jesus.
We ask this in His Name. Amen.

Today's Bible verses-

(Prov. 30:5 KJV)"Every word of God is pure; he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him."

(Ps. 109 KJV) "Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies."

(Ps. 33:20, 21 KJV)"Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. (v.21) For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have  trusted in his holy name."

Today's quote-

Samuel Chadwick- "Power is the recompense of prayer. It takes us long to learn that prayer is more important than organization, more powerful than armies, more influential than wealth, and mightier than all learning. Prevailing prayer makes men invincible. They who prevail in the secret place of the Most High cannot be beaten anywhere. All things are possible to secret prayer. (p. 81 of THE PATH OF PRAYER, by Chadwick).

I'm Thankful God
Plans to Use Me

"It's years ago that God did speak
Some wisdom to my heart.
It was His will I was to seek
And learn what was my part.

I wanted to do all His will
So on Him I did call.
I waited upon Him until
His thoughts for me would fall."
