Gossip is Deadly

In Sharon Jaynes's article today, Gossip is Deadly, she says, "If you would not say something in front of the person you are talking about, then you’re probably gossiping."

"A monster was sneaking into my yard in the dark of night and devouring my prize plants.

I never saw his beady eyes or heard his pounding footsteps – just the aftermath of his destruction.

He left a trail of slim as he moved from plant to plant, leaving large gaping holes in broad leaf Gerber Daisies, gnawing entire velvety trumpet-shaped blossoms on purple petunias and reducing bushy begonias to naked stalks.

'
I asked a neighbor about my flowerbed’s demise and she determined, 'You’ve got slugs.'

'Slugs!' I exclaimed. 'The yard monster is a tiny little slug?'

'You can put out slug bait to catch them and see for yourself,' my confident neighbor continued.

I sprinkled slug bait all around the yard and then waited. The next morning I viewed the 'monsters' remains. The beasts were about ¼ inch long – about the size of my little toe nail.

How could something so small cause so much damage in such a short amount of time? I mused.

Then my mind thought of something else that is very small that can cause enormous damage in a short amount of time… gossip. King Solomon wrote, “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.”

Just as one tiny slug can destroy an entire flower bed, so can one tiny morsel of gossip destroy a person’s reputation, mare one’s character, and devour a friendship.

In the South we have this knack for making gossips sound…almost nice. All you have to do is add 'bless her heart' to the end of the sentence.

It goes like this: 'Susie gained fifty pounds with that last pregnancy, bless her heart.' 'Marcy’s husband ran off with his secretary, bless her heart.' 'I heard Clair yelling at the postman yesterday, bless her heart.' But all the 'bless her hearts' don’t make mask what it really is…gossip."

Charles Allen, the author of God’s Psychiatry observed: 'Those of great minds discuss ideas, people of mediocre minds discuss events, and those of small minds discuss other people.'  Maybe if we are spending our time talking about people, we need to fill our minds with better material such as good books and other reading material (and I don’t mean People Magazine or the National Enquirer).

What exactly is gossip? Webster defines gossip as 'easy, fluent, trivial talk, talk about people behind their backs.' It is repeating information about another person’s private affairs. If you have to look around to make sure that no one can hear what you are saying, you are probably gossiping.

If you would not say something in front of the person you are talking about, then you’re probably gossiping.

We have often heard the phrase, 'knowledge is power.' Perhaps that is why gossip is so appealing. It suggests a certain amount of power because, 'I have the inside scoop.'

But gossip is not power. On the contrary it shows a lack of power…lack of self-control.

Solomon wrote, “Whoever repeats the matter separates close friends,” Proverbs 17:9 TNIV

Today, let’s make our lives a NO GOSSIP ZONE.

Let’s Pray

Lord, please keep a guard over my mouth today. If I even consider gossiping about someone, convict me before a word leaves my mouth. May the words of my mouth be pleasing in Your sight today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Go back to Webster’s definition of gossip.  Can you think of anything you have said in the last week that would fit that description?

Let’s 'say no' to gossip. If you are willing to eliminate gossip from your life, click over to www.facebook.com/sharonjaynesand type in the following words: I’m living in a NO GOSSIP ZONE.

“Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down,”  Proverbs 26:20 NIV .

Ps. 15:1,3  (NKJV), reads, "LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill?" (v3) "He who does not backbite with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor does he take up a reproach against his friend."

Speaking of gardens, here are two cute poems written by my 90 yr. old writer-friend, Farlene D. Benson:

                                   SPRING CATALOG

"There's something not right. There's something amiss.

The catalog pictures did not look like this.

Where are the masses and masses of bloom

That call all the bees with their fragrant perfume?

Why do my hollyhocks not stand tall?

I've planted my plants and I've planted my seeds

But all that I get from my plants are weeds!

I'll have to remember, when catalogs come,

They sell plants and seeds but not a green thumb.

GREEN THUMB?

My plight is a sad one. My thumb isn't green.

My mums aren't the biggest that I've ever seen.

My glads aren't the tallest or fullest of bloom.

My ivy won't grow 'till it circles the room.

My African violets of flowers are bare.

Though I've read everything I can find on their care.

My narcissus bulbs never put on a show.

And most of the seeds that I plant just won't grow.

But what do I care if my thumb isn't green.

If I can't grow a radish, zucchini, or bean?

God's given me patience my garden to tend.

And given "impatients", a gardener's best friend."

Who Can Pass up Chocolate?

Tami Thurber shares with us how we can actually find, "It’s easy to splurge, to let our self-control lag for a moment, but unhealthy food is not the only contaminate we allow into our systems.

I’m sick because I’m dumb. Last week my husband went with me to the grocery store.

Normally I glide by the dessert aisle with a grace and speed that would make Little Debbie shiver.

However, Tim, succumbing to a lack of sweets, brought our cart to a halt in front of that sandwich cookie with the wonderful filling.

My guard was down and I gave in. Unfortunately, I ate way more than double the stuff. Then yesterday I ate a large order of fries for lunch and a bag of microwave popcorn for supper.

I still haven’t gotten rid of that giant-grease-ball-sitting-in-your-stomach feeling. We know what we eat affects our physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and yet I would guess I’m not the only one who has ignored that axiom.

It’s easy to splurge, to let our self-control lag for a moment, but unhealthy food is not the only contaminate we allow into our systems.

We also allow unhealthy thoughts, attitudes, and actions to infiltrate. Our spirits become contaminated when gossip slips from our lips, when we watch that show or look online at images that pull at our passions, and even when we burst out in anger.

Letting down our guard of self-control is so easy, and yet we all slip.

There are many practical steps we can take to get rid of contaminates in our body, but before we take the practical steps, we must understand WHY we should rid ourselves of impurity.

First, our spirits get sick from impure actions just as my body got sick from junk food. When we willingly contaminate our bodies with impure thoughts and actions, we are spiritually functioning at second-rate levels.

The second reason we should desire purity is out of reverence for God. God desires for us to give our lives to him as a sacrifice, holy and pleasing to him. When we willingly contaminate our spirits, we give a mediocre offering to God.

Examine your life. Ask God to show you any attitudes, actions, or thoughts that are contaminating your spirit and tainting your offering to God. Letting down your guard, even just for a moment, will make you sick.

"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." II Corinthians 7:1

Ingratitude is Contagious...Don't Be a Carrier

Sharon Jaynes shares with us, "Ingratitude laced with grumbling, complaining, and murmuring is an easy trap to fall into.

  And it is so contagious.

Someone grumbles and the next thing you know, you fall right in line and start grumbling too.

I wonder if that’s what happened in the wilderness as the Israelites made one more trek around Mount Sinai.

'I’m sick of this manna,' one complained.

Then another looked at God’s sweet provision and said, 'Come to think of it, I’m sick of it too.'

The next thing you know the sea of ingrates becomes a tidal wave of grumblers and God sends them on another lap around the wilderness and places a 'Do Not Enter' sign in front of the Promised Land.

When you think about it, ingratitude is a casual despising of God’s sovereignty. It’s like saying we don’t like how He is running things and think we could do it better.

Gratitude and giving thanks in all things opens our eyes to see God’s glory in even the smallest things.

On the other hand, ingratitude blinds our eyes to God’s presence, and we miss His advances all around. It’s a choice, not an emotion.

However, this choice to give thanks may very well open the way for positive emotions such as joy to emerge and take hold.

Paul wrote: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again (because you probably didn't get it the first time): Rejoice!” (Phil. 4:4, parentheses mine).

There is nobody more miserable than an ungrateful person.

Margaret and I were chatting about gratitude when she mentioned how she tries to steer clear of those who grumble and complain because their ingratitude is so contagious.

'I hate calling my sister,' she mused. 'I mean, I love her. But talking to her is such a joy drain.'

'What do you mean?' I asked.

'All she does is complain. Something is always wrong with her house. She always has a new ailment.

She gives me the latest obituary report and tells me who is sick with what. A couple of times I tried to cheer her up. You know, help her see the positive side of things.

‘At least you have a house. Think of all those people who lost their homes in the hurricane.’ But it only made her mad. She said I was not being sympathetic and that I made little of her problems.

  So now I just listen.'

I thought of Henry Ward Beecher’s words: 'Pride slays thanksgiving…a proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.' Eyes shut tight to God’s glory.

I am reminded of an old saying that stirs and stings: 'Gratitude turns what we have into enough.' Always enough.

Jesus thanked God for the two loaves and five fish… and there was more than enough to go around (John 6:1-13).

Today, make a commitment to turn your grumbling to grateful, your complaining into contentment, and your whining (did I just say that…yes I did) into praising God!"

Ingratitude is Contagious…Don’t Be a Carrier  Sharon Jaynes  1/16/13

"When the Lord heard your complaining, he became very angry. So he solemnly swore, ‘Not one of you from this wicked generation will live to see the good land I swore to give your ancestors, except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see this land because he has followed the Lord completely. I will give to him and his descendants some of the very land he explored during his scouting mission."  (Deu. 1:35-36 NLT)

Let’s Pray

[Sometimes I open my Bible and simply pray the Psalms. Join me today!]

"Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live", (Psalm 146:1). "Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!" (Psalm 147:1). "Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness." (Psalm 150:1-2). "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever." (Psalm 136:1).

In Jesus’ Name I praise You!
Amen."

Now It’s Your Turn

Do you feel far from God today? If so, maybe you’re knocking on the wrong door. What does Psalm 100:4 tell us about how we are to enter God’s presence?

If complaining were a color, what color would it be?

If being grateful, thankful and appreciative were a color, what color would it be?

Now, what color do you want to be today?

If you would like 2013 to be the year that you change your grumbling into grateful…that you get a handle on that little muscle with a big impact…your tongue, then check out my book, The Power of a Woman’s Words. It also has a Bible Study Guide and a DVD that is perfect for group studies or simply to dig deeper into God’s Word on your own.  www.girlfriendsingod.com

{If you need help to stop complaining, ask an elder or friend in a Bible-believing church to pray for deliverance. There is an evil spirit that attaches it'self to folks, and it will keep trying to influence them to grumble and complain.

Once you've been prayed for, for deliverance from its control, each time you find yourself starting to complain, refuse to do it in Jesus' name! After a few times, you will experience deliverance and victory!}

Today's quote:  Sharon Jaynes – “Ingratitude is the infection of Eden that closes eyes shut tight to glory moments to experience God and leaves us groping about in the dark for that which will never satisfy the longings of the soul.

The cure comes in capsules of praise, thanksgiving, and a grateful heart. Gratitude is the antibiotic of the soul to cure a variety of the world’s ills. It cuts the bark of our hard hearts and nourishes the very spot where we are grafted into Jesus Christ Himself, and restores a sense of closeness and intimacy with God.”

Prayer note:     Know the Bible enough to understand God’s will in what you pray. It is all important.

Our thought for today: We honor God by pressing on to maturity in Christ.

Slow Dance

(Written by a teenager with cancer:)

                                              Slow Dance

"Have you ever watched
kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's
erratic flight? Or gazed at the
sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask, “How are you?”
 Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
with the next hundred chores running through your head?

You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short
The music won't last.

 Ever told your child,
 We'll do it tomorrow?
 And in your haste,
 Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die
 Cause you never had time
 To call and say,'Hi'

 You'd better slow down.
 Don't dance so fast.
 Time is short.
 The music won't last..

When you run so fast to get somewhere,
You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
 Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over."

"Dear God, With a trembling heart, I approach Your throne of grace today in reverence and humility – fully aware that You are holy and I am not. Speak, Lord. Show me the plans you have for me. Bind me to Your Word and to Your strength so I will have the courage to obey. May my brokenness be restored for the beauty of Your glory. Please help me to trust You with my today and tomorrows. In Jesus’s name, amen."

Marriage Monday: Managing Capacity

Jill says:
For as far back as I can remember, I’ve always done well managing a lot of activity in my life. In high school I balanced academics with school musicals, piano and voice lessons, work, volunteering at church, class officer responsibilities, community theater, marching band and more.  I love living life to the fullest and have always had the energy to accomplish whatever I set out to do!"

(Be sure to check out Jill's message so Mark will have an opportunity to give his viewpoint on the subject. It's great information!)

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 51:17 "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

Today's praise verse:  Ps. 9:1-2 "I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High."

Today’s quote: Derek Prince - "The environment you live in has much to do with what you experience. I firmly believe the Spirit-filled believer should create an environment around him of positive faith, confidence, and praise." (Taken from his book, The Gifts of the Spirit, pg 133).

Some thoughts today: In view of God's giving His only Son to make a way of salvation for us, ought we not to give our lives to serve Him?

- If we're called to suffer for His Name's sake, is that too much to ask, when He suffered so much to provide a way back to the Father?

- Death does not terminate our Real future, as we'll be in heaven with eternity to enjoy! Think of all the folks who're dying each day just because they're called "Christians". Will we also be willing to declare our allegiance to Jesus?

God Sets a Table, Too!

Frances Gregory Pasch tells us that "God sets a beautiful table for us. Throughout the Bible, He offers us a splendid variety of spiritual food for our souls.

"Once you start to taste the food that God has to offer, says Fran, you’ll want to return frequently for more substantial food."

"My husband regularly sets a beautiful table. It’s not your usual table covered with a cloth and filled with dishes, silverware, glasses, and condiments.

This one is on our back deck and displays a variety of unusually shaped bird feeders—some plastic, others metal, some small and others extra large.

Each is filled with a variety of different kind of seeds. Jim also sets out suet.

Our state bird, the gold finch, frequently visits our deck for a snack. Red-winged blackbirds, red poles, sparrows, doves, and cardinals also stop quite often for a meal.

It’s fun to watch the different tactics of each species. The small birds peck a little at a time, and seem to be in no hurry, while the larger birds swoop in, gobble up the seeds and quickly fly away.

With so many winged friends dining with us, Jim often has to fill the feeders daily.

God sets an even more beautiful table.

Throughout the Bible, He offers us a splendid variety of spiritual food for our souls—simple truths for beginners who, like the small birds, need messages that are easily digestible without rushing, and deeper treasures for more seasoned Christians to savor.

Regardless of the level of our spiritual growth, there’s always plenty of food for everyone.

Once you start to taste the food that God has to offer, you’ll want to return frequently for more substantial food.

The words you absorb from the Bible will stay with you longer than normal nourishment. You will discover they give you strength to deal with whatever situations come your way.

Why is it that we always find time to feed our bodies, often gobbling up more than we should, but somehow don’t concentrate on nourishing our spirits?

If Jim and I get excited when birds visit our feeders, and we get disappointed when they don’t come, God must feel the same way about us. He must smile when we regularly open the Bible and feast on His words. But He must be sad when we get busy and forget to spend time with Him.

Set aside time to surprise God with an unexpected visit. He’ll be happy, and you’ll be blessed.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34 NIV
