Looking...Fixing...Focusing...

bicycle1

Morna Gilbert shares with us:  "What do you find yourself focusing on today? Or more realistically, what are you focusing on this moment?

Pain? To do list? Angry thoughts? Food? What if’s? Whys? Hows? Whens?

This last summer our family embarked on an adventurous 15 mile bike ride down a mountain trail in Idaho—the trail was an old railroad bed that included trestle bridges, switchbacks, sharp cliffs, and many tunnels.

The beginning required going through a 1.66 mile tunnel of damp blackness with streams of water running down both sides. It was barely wide enough for 2-way traffic and lights were required.

My light, overwhelmed by the darkness, illuminated the end of my front tire. All I could see ahead were the lights of the wiggly, faltering bike riders coming toward me from the other direction.

Overcoming blackness pervaded. My heart panicked. I knew there was no way I was going to survive this ordeal. My daughters behind me were yelling, “You okay, mom?”

A sheepish, “Yeah” was all I could get out. My bike wobbled as I imagined myself crashing into the side of the tunnel, drawn in by the heavy stream of water causing a massive domino effect of smashed bodies and bikes behind me.

Then I saw it…

…The reflector on the backside of my strong, integrity-filled son-in-law who was riding in front of me.

I honed in on his reflector. As long as I kept pace with him – not too far away—and fixed my eyes on his reflector my bike riding was strong, confident and steady.

But as soon as I was distracted by the wobbly bikers, the rushing water, and the blackness…I faltered.

That ride changed my walk with my Lord forever.

“…Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross…” Hebrews 12:2a NASB

How can we make sure we finish the race? How do we endure the trials of this life? Long-term illness? Debt beyond comprehension? Children in prison?

Name your trial:_________

We all experience times when we are distracted or contemplating giving up. How do we finish the race?

How did our Lord endure the Cross of Calvary?

He fixed His eyes on the joy set before Him. He fixed His eyes on the One Who could carry Him.

He fixed His eyes. He looked upward. He mentally stepped out
of His circumstances and entered Holy Ground – at the feet of
His Father. He is our reflector. Our focus is to be on Him and
because He is the Champion of the race—we can finish! May our
eyes never wander again.

What’s Your Magnifying Glass Focused On? 6 Steps To Better Relationships

Jill Savage's profile photoPosted: 03 Apr 2014 04:00 AM PDT  by Jill Savage

"One of the things I remember about being at my grandpa’s house was a magnifying glass that he kept on the table beside his chair.  It was a heavy duty lens and I loved positioning it over different items and looking at them in larger-than-life form...

It’s not the big things that kill relationships. It’s often the little things that accumulate over time. Looking at faults through a magnifying glass is a little thing that can do damage over the long haul unless we do something about it.

Here are six ways to see others in a more balanced way:

1) Move the magnifying glass... (Be sure to check out Jill's post to find out what she advises about how to see others better.)

Let’s pray: A Prayer for spiritual peace

"Father, we regularly come to You asking for peace regarding situations that we don't understand or have no personal ability to change.

Way too often troubling circumstances capture our emotions and rob us of the peace promised to those who place their trust in You.

Help us not to be tossed about by the changing circumstances of our lives, but to be steadfast as we discipline our mind to be fixed upon You.

Only then will we know true life sustaining peace while sojourning here below. Amen." prayer@bibledeck.com

Today’s Bible verse: 2 Chor. 10:4 NIV "For the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

Today’s quotes: John Lubbock -“What you see depends mainly on what you look for.”

Max Lucado – “The crowd at the cross concluded that the purpose of the pounding was to skewer the hands of Christ to a beam. But they were only half-right. We can’t fault them for missing the other half. They couldn’t see it. But Jesus could. And heaven could. And we can.”

Some thoughts today: Have you encouraged someone today?

- God works through us in our giving, whether it is in our words, actions, or material possessions.

- What is more effective and encouraging than a financial gift in support of a ministry that honors God?
