#19 Intercession as a Christian Role

C. Peter Wagner
tells us, "Intercession, as I have mentioned, [in his book, PRAYER SHIELD], is only one kind of prayer.

But it is so important that Jesus Himself is described as an intercessor.
Jesus Christ, at the right hand of God, "also makes intercession for us" (Rom. 8:34).

Likewise, the Holy Spirit "makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God" (Rom. 8:27).

The Father, of course, is not mentioned as an intercessor because He is the One to whom the intercession is made.

On the human level, Paul characterizes himself as an intercessor when he says to the Romans, "Without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers" (Rom. 1:9).

Before developing the idea of intercession as a spiritual gift, I want to make it clear that intercession is a role expected of every faithful Christian.

In fact, I do not know of any Christian brother or sister who does not, on a fairly regular basis, pray for others.

Paul says to Timothy: "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men"  (1 Tim. 2:1).

James says, "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed" (James. 5:16).

Not only should every one of us be interceding for others, but most of us undoubtedly should be doing it much more than we are.

If I am honest, I will have to admit that although I do intercede for others, I do not intercede enough.
I need to intercede more for my spouse, my children, my extended family, my colleagues in ministry, my pastor and my friends, both saved and unsaved.

At a bare minimum, a decent Christian life should be characterized by at least one designated time each day for prayer, including intercession.

How long this daily time should be I will discuss later on. Here my point is simply that the rule is not just for some Christians but for all of them.

Intercession is a universal christian role."

The next post-from Wagner’s book, is on 8/22 #20 Intercession as a Spiritual Gift

Let’s pray:

Father, it is true, we are lacking in our perseverance in praying for others. We ask that You impress us of the need to be more diligent to support those in need, especially our leaders, family members, and friends. Awaken us to what is on Your heart, and help us pray effectively and fervently. We pray this in the Lovely Name of Jesus, amen.

Today’s Bible verse:

(Prov. 4:7) "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."

Today’s quote

Joseph Prince - "Grace is greater than sin."

Some thoughts today

The life and testimony of a "Christian" can draw or repel
unbelievers!

- Your identity doesn't depend on your job. It depends on your relationship with Christ.

-God has chosen you!

#76 Suggestions for Your Prayer Role

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: Regardless of your leadership role—pastor, teacher, Sunday School leader, lay leader, youth leader, missionary—adapt this to your situation.

   1. Plan your intercession for your people. You will be sure to fail God and your people unless you have a regular prayer plan for your intercession times. If anything in life is worth planning, surely this is. (Google image, Man with uplifted hand).

#64 The Gift of Intercession

C. Peter Wagner continues telling us about intercession, with today's message on The Gift of Intercession:

"Not all of our intercessors have the gift of intercession, although I think God has chosen to allow us the privilege of a rather high percentage of those with the gift for reasons I will mention later.

Of our 18 1-2 intercessors, [he then lists them], 10 have been recognized as having a gift of intercession.

Doris and I consider the eight who do not have the gift of intercession as essential and precious to ourselves and our ministry as those who do.

Some who do not have the gift are actually more committed to supporting us day in and day out than some who do.

The center and guards are no less important on a football team than the running backs and the ends. It takes the whole group as a team to win.

Because this kind of language is relatively new to our Christian community in general, the process of absorbing its implications takes time.

Pam Marhad is a key member of our team. But she had to work through her role as an 1-2 intercessor as one who does not have a spiritual gift of intercession.

She wrote about her experience in Body Life, our Sunday School class monthly newsletter.

She said, "More often than not, when I decide I will pray for certain people or situations, a feeling of frustration and 'what's the use?' overcomes my good intentions and defeats me."

As she prayed about it, Pam felt the Lord took her to the parable of the talents in Matthew 25.

There it is clear that God is the one who decides who gets what talents and how many.

[Check out my post of Peter's message on this subject: #15  God Selects the Gifts].

When she saw that, she confessed, "I've been guilty of looking around and saying in my heart, 'Lord, I'm just a one-talent prayer.' Others You have made five-talent pray-ers let them pray. My prayers probably don't matter."

Then Pam rightly concludes that all God expects of her is to use the resources He has given her, nothing more, nothing less.

"As I'm faithful and obedient to use what He's given,' Pam says, 'then He's free to give me more if He chooses. If I don't value His gifts to me and neglect them because they don't measure up to what I see others doing, then I very effectively tie the Lord's hands in my life and find myself on the outside looking in with envy and resentment."

It could not be said better.

As I write this (possible because I am writing this book), a note just received from Bobbye Byerly says, 'Peter, you are coming up No. 1 in my prayer discharge right now. It's nothing I've done or failed to do. Nothing you've done. I would guess that God is orchestrating a new realm of prayer support for you at this time."

series taken from C. Peter Wagner’s
book, PRAYER SHIELDHow to
intercede for pastors, Christian leaders
and others on the spiritual frontlines.
(pgs. 127-129)  by Regal Books

Let’s pray:

Father, when we understand that our prayers are important to You, and to those we're praying for, help us be faithful to pray.

I know that You've given me gifts, and I claim them now, asking that You'll help me recognize what they are, and how You want me to walk in them.

My desire is to please You, and to be effective in what You've called me to be active in, and not compare my gifts with others around me.

I ask these things in Jesus' Name. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Deu. 4:7 "For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

Today’s quote: Joel T. Barnaby "The church is full of men who have been well-nursed in the bosom of the Church, but never fathered by the ministry of a "Paul" type figure. Many leaders in the Church have enjoyed the process of spiritual conception; few have ever taken the responsibility of being a true father. We need more Father's in the Church who will "travail until Christ be formed" by covenant relationships."

Some thoughts today: You may think you're too old, but there are dreams and visions yet. Go after them, and ask the Father to supply what you'll need to see them come to reality. As God waits on us, do something! You are coming into the time of provision—rest in it.

- Are you willing to risk obeying God's leadership?

- We need each other, as there are times we are in error, and others can speak into our lives with truth, to help us make changes that are needed to learn how to walk with God more effectively.

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel-  1. Be sure you are filled with the Spirit. This assurance is foundational to everything in the spiritual Life.

#105 Rule #6: The Intercessors

C. Peter Wagner: "Work with intercessors especially gifted and called to strategic- level warfare, seeking God's revelation of:

(a) the redemptive gift or gifts of the city; (b) Satan's strongholds in the city; (c) territorial spirits assigned to the city; (d) corporate sin past and present that needs to be dealt with; and (e) God's plan of attack and timing.

Some of the key players in a well -developed warfare prayer strategy for a city will be intercessors. If the work is going to be done well, gifted intercessors need to be identified, encouraged and released to stand in the gap.

Every Christian has a role of prayer in general and intercession in particular. But God has chosen some Christians and given them a special gift of intercession.

If this sounds strange, just compare it to the role that every christian has to be a witness, but only a small number have received a spiritual gift of evangelist.

The whole body cannot be an eye, only some of the members are supposed to be.

I describe the gift of intercession in my book Your Spiritual Gifts Can Help Your Church Grow I list it as one of the 27 gifts, but I freely admit it is one that has no direct biblical statement as a gift. Although some may disagree with me, I am certain enough such a gift exists.
(This book can be purchased for $.01 + postage of $3.99, paperback or hardcover)

Cindy Jacobs characterizes intercessors as those who act as enforcers of God's will on earth. God has chosen that His will be done through our asking and taking dominion. She says,

"Through our taking dominion over the works of Satan in the
earth and praying in the name of our King, we establish His
will on earth as it is in heaven."

[p. 56 in Possessing the Gates of the Enemy, (Tarrytown, NY: Chosen Books, 1991).

Intercessors are found in almost every church, and certainly in every city with a reasonable number of churches. Very few pastors are also intercessors.

Therefore both pastors and intercessors are needed to pray effectively for a city. The pastors function largely in an authority role and intercessors function largely in a prophetic role. They hear from God, and can communicate this to others.

They should be formed into a group to harmonize, encourage and hold each other accountable. Through them and also through the pastors and other lay Christians, those who are praying for the city should seek God's revelation of several things:.."

Father, when we get together to pray
for our cities, may we be mindful
of what Wagner has shared.
Help us see how important it is to gather together,
and to pray for Your will to be done.
Our pastor needs our support in his endeavors
to serve You and the people he's responsible for.
May we be supportive of the work he's
a part of, and to pray faithfully for him.
I ask this in Jesus' Name.
Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: (Ps. 119:18) "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of they law."

Today’s quote:

Dr. Charles F. Stanley - "Prayer accomplishes much (James 5:16). It engages the Lord in people's personal lives as well as in the affairs of government. It is the way we experience oneness with our Father and receive the essentials needed to carry out His work." (Taken from p. 42 of IN TOUCH, a Publication of In Touch Ministries / April 2014)

Some thoughts today:

~A vertical relationship with God must be maintained to have a healthy relationship horizontally with others. Guard yourself against offenses and divisions.

~ Get more of Jesus in you by devouring His Word. Have an attentive attitude towards what He says to you. You can experience His Real Life!

~ Love God, each other, and not the world. When we become His children, we are no longer "orphans". We are his precious children, adopted into His family, The Church.

#75 Your Responsibility to Intercede for Your People

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: God has given you no greater responsibility than that of interceding for your people. It is as urgent to bring your people before God in prayer as it is to bring God before your people in your messages.

You must intercede for your ministry, the services, and the outreach. But you must also intercede for your people family by family and person by person. (Calling men to pray).

#39 The Shepherd Heart

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: Do you have a shepherd's heart? Nothing is more essential to Christian leadership. There are several Bible Descriptions of Christian leaders.

They are to be watchmen. God told Ezekiel He had made him a watchman for Israel, with two duties: to hear from God, and to give the people God's message (Ezek. 3:17). (Google image, What are the duties of the Pastor?)

#61 Personal Intercessors

C. Peter Wagner tells us, ""God uses crisis intercessors as we saw with D. L. Moody and teams of intercessors as with Gary Greenwald.

He also uses personal intercessors, those who make a commitment to pray over an extended period of time for a particular pastor or other Christian leader.

As I have studied the phenomenon of personal intercession for several years in the role of a participant observer, I have found it useful to separate personal intercessors into three approximate categories.

I like to think of personal intercession as operating in three concentric circles around the leader.
  • The inner circle. Here we picture the pastor along with what I will call I-1 intercessors.
  • The middle circle. This contains I-2 intercessors.
  • The outer circle. This contains I-3 intercessors.
Think of the I-1 intercessors as having a close relationship to the pastor, the I-2 intercessors as having a casual relationship, and I-3 intercessors as having a remote relationship to the pastor.

I will describe them from the outside in."

(My following blog posts will continue to cover the material C. Peter Wagner shares in his book, PRAYER SHIELD).

Let’s pray:

Father, may we be willing to be prayer warriors for our pastors, whether we find ourselves in the inner circle, middle circle, or outer circle of his friendships.

Help me to see and move in the circle I am in, so that my prayers are effective for my leaders.

Cause me to be faithful to pray for my leaders, and may I sense their needs as I pray for them. I ask for Your help, in the Holy Name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer
for your pastor: Preaching. “Anoint my pastor with the truth. As _________preaches, may he/she proclaim Jesus Christ in the energy of the Holy Spirit. Let people be cut to the heart and accept Christ. Confirm __________’s message with signs and wonders. Heal the sick, and set the oppressed free  Matt. 16:17; Col. 1:28; Acts 2:37; Mk. 16:20.   Terry Teykl  Tyndale Publishing - Scripture-Based Prayer card.

Today’s Bible verse:  Ps. 21:13 "Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power."

Today’s quote: Lynn Karisen – “I find joy in each new experience I encounter. Some of the best experiences are when the Creator reveals a bit more of Himself to me through life experiences or simple truths discovered in my quiet time. Although learning a new hobby, theory can be fulfilling, I find treasure in each new glimpse of who He is.”

Some thoughts today: Christ gives His Spirit of wisdom and revelation to those who open their hearts and lives to Him for Salvation.

We’ll have to deal with authority, as we will walk in authority someday.

We’re as close to God as we want to be. Our words reveal who we are, and what our relationship to Him is.

#61 The Prayer of Faith (Part 2)

Dr. Wesley L. Duewel: Dr. Duewel continues..

#18 Gifts and Roles

C. Peter Wagner shares with us "Every spiritual gift, like every member of the human body, is itself in the minority.

More members of your body are not fingers than are fingers.

More are not lungs than are lungs. Likewise in the church.

More members are not pastors than pastors. More are not teachers than teachers.

More are not healers than healers. And we could go right down the list of gifts in the same way.

Although relatively few Christians have any one of the spiritual gifts, without exception, have roles that parallel most of the gifts.

For example, not all Christians have the gift of evangelist, but all have the role of being witnesses for Christ and leading people to the Lord.

Not all have the  gift of giving, but all have a role of healing, but all have a role of laying on of hands and praying for the sick.

Again, we could go right down the rest of the list.

This distinction is extremely important. We all do many, many things in our churches using the multiple roles God has given us.

But usually we do a few things with a higher and more consistent degree of power and effectiveness because we receive a special anointing from the Holy Spirit through our spiritual gift or gifts."

The next post- #19  Intercession as a Christian Role

Let’s pray: Father, please help us understand these principles of the gifts You've given, and may we honor others in our church Body, who have various gifts. May we learn ways to use our own gifts to benefit our friends there. Bless those who have gifts that we may wish we had, knowing that You're in charge of their distribution. In Christ's Name we pray, amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 28:7 "The LORD is my strength and my shield: my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him."

Today’s quote: Michael Brooks – “Have you lost a little of your old vigor for the Lord? What has changed? Is it time to do a little spring cleaning on some old thoughts and ideas? How much time are you spending in the Word? When I was a new Christian I read the Bible every chance I had. Whenever I feel my enthusiasm waning a bit, I always go back to the Word. It always reignites my fire for the Lord. Are you in need of a little renewal, inspiration or motivation? It's simple -- just read the Word.”

Some thoughts today: Don't be angry at the season God has you in. Trust His wisdom, plan, and timing. Ps. 40:4a "Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust."
We’re challenged to stir up the gift of God in us through the laying of hands by leadership in our church, or a visiting minister/prophet.

Your “reset” button can be set by prayer and praise.
