#25 Personal and Warfare Intercession

C. Peter Wagner tells us, "Some intercessors receive a special calling to pray on a regular and intense basis for a specific person or persons.

Usually these are pastors and other Christian leaders.

This whole book, (PRAYER SHIELD - from $1.86 + postage), is an in-depth examination of this ministry.

Biblically, as I have mentioned previously, I believe Euodia and Syntyche of the Philipian church are two examples of Paul's personal intercessors
(see Phil. 4:2, 3).

Some intercessors are called especially to engage the enemy in high-level spiritual warfare.

This is an advance kind of intercession and by far the most demanding and potentially dangerous of them all.

Since many crisis intercessors and personal intercessors find themselves in direct conflict with the forces of darkness from time to time, some may argue against making a separate category for warfare intercession.

But I believe there is value in recognizing that some
intercessors do this on a much more regular basis than most.

Two excellent sources for more information on strategic-level intercession are Cindy Jacobs' book, Possessing the Gates of the Enemy (Chosen Books), and my book, Warfare Prayer (Regal Books. It's only $.o1 + postage!)

Today’s post -#25 Personal and Warfare Intercession, in the series taken from C. Peter Wagner’s book, PRAYER SHIELD, How to intercede for pastors, Christian leaders and others on the spiritual frontlines. (pp. 55, 56) By Regal Books

The next post 10/10 - #26  Discovering Your Gift of Intercession

Let’s pray:

Father, it's time we see what You want us to accomplish in our praying. May we understand how to intercede for others, so as to support them in their needs. There'll come times when we'll also need their support. Help us be willing to pray, knowing You hear us, and You'll answer in ways that will surprise us. In Jesus' Name we ask this. Amen

Today’s Bible verse:

John 13:34, 35 KJV "A new commandment I give unto
you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that
ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that
ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." [This
is fulfilling the 6 original commandments in the Law,
where our treating others in involved.]

Today’s quote:

~ Eddie Jones – “I pray a lot on airplanes. Not because I’m afraid of crashing, but because I enjoy listing God’s promises in my prayer journal, pouring out my heart, and claiming His provision and protection. On the ground, I’m too busy to give God more than twenty minutes a day. In the air, He gets hours."

Some thoughts today

~ When I put myself under law, it is only to maintain a new habit. The Law of God is to protect me. Check out how Jesus looks at what's important. (Matthew 11:28-30)

~ Do you want to be like others? Be careful who it is that's leading you. Make sure it's God.

~ Go to God for help and deliverance. He prospers those who turn to Him, and repent when needed.

#23 Ministries of Intercession

C. Peter Wagner shares this with us: "Intercessors in general engage in four specific kinds of ministries.

We will understand this better if we are able to make the biblical distinction between gifts, ministries and activities.

In 1 Cor. 12 we read that there are "diversities of gifts" (v. 4), "differences of ministries" (v. 5), and "diversities of activities" (v. 6), all under the working of the same God.

I take this to mean that different people with the same spiritual gift will have different ministries assigned to them by God.

For example, among those with the gift of evangelist some may have a ministry of personal evangelism and others may have a ministry of public evangelism

Other people with the same ministry will have different activities assigned to them by God.

Take those who have a ministry of public evangelism, for example.

Some may be called primarily to do citywide crusades, while others may be called to local church-based evangelism.

Of the latter, some may be itinerant, going from church to church and others may be evangelistically gifted pastors who use their gift primarily in one pulpit.

The principle will apply to any spiritual gift, including the gift of intercession.

The four ministries most frequently exercised by those with the gift of intercession are general intercession, crisis intercession, personal intercession and warfare intercession.

Some intercessors will do all four on a more or less regular basis, while others will specialize in fewer than four, frequently concentrating on only one of the ministries.

{The following is the first of four intercession ministries C. Peter Wagner mentions...the other 3 will come in two following posts.}

  • General Intercession Those who have a ministry of general intercession will spend long hours praying over prayer lists, prayer guides and any number of miscellaneous prayer request given to them. Many churches collect slips of paper with prayer requests on Sunday mornings. General intercessors will pray for them during the week. Ask a general intercessor to pray for something and you can rest assured it will be well prayed for."

The next post on 10/3 from Wagner’s book, is #24 Crisis Intercession
Let’s pray: Father, as we learn more about how we can serve our church, pastor(s), and church goers, may we become more acutely aware of the needs, and support them with our prayers of intercession. In the Lovely Name of our Savior, Jesus, amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 73:28 KJV "But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works."

Today’s quote: Gwen Smith – “I would guess that, like me, you love the thought of God as your refuge. My heart completely resonates with the concept of His everlasting arms beneath me. Holding me. Protecting me. Guiding me. Do I fully understand it? Not at all… but it sure does help me to accept the concept of God’s eternal nature. More than that, it helps me to embrace His infinite nature.”

Some thoughts today: The yardstick we use to give, is the yardstick God uses to bless us. 2 Cor. 9:6, 7 gives us the key of being a victorious Christian.

- You'll have lots of opportunities to trust God!  The happiest people in church are givers. Don't choose to remain under the slavery of refusing to give, keeping everything for yourself.

- As obedient children of God, we'll find the abundance He plans for us. He wants to make your home a refuge.

#11 Intercession is a Spiritual Warfare

C. Peter Wagner shares with us, Jane Anne Pratt is one of Doris's and my personal prayer partners.

She is a member of the Dallas, Texas staff of the Eastern European Seminary mission organization.

Even before she was a staff member she had been called as a personal intercessor for John Maisel, the mission's president.

Jane, I might mention, is a mature, seasoned and experienced intercessor.

In the days soon after the Iron curtain had come down, John Maisel had made another of his frequent trips to the eastern bloc.

This time he lectured on 'Is Jesus God?' at Moscow State University, then to a crowd of 20,000 to 30,000 in Bucharest, then home to their base in Vienna.

Jane, in Dallas, was much in prayer for him.

The lecture turned out to be excellent and many were saved.

Obviously the forces of darkness were greatly upset, not only by Maisel's lecture in Moscow, but by the power channeled through Hane's intercession in Dallas.

What happened shows the degree to which intercession for leaders is in essence spiritual warfare.

On one of those nights at 2:00 A.M., Jane Anne Pratt was awakened by the presence of an incredible force of darkness there in her room.

She says, 'I battled in prayer and still it was more that I could handle. It drained my whole energy and life support system. I couldn't moveI was totally paralyzed.'

As she communed with the Holy Spirit she was assured that John himself was in no particular danger a that time.

She sensed that 'this powerful force of darkness had been sent to destroy John, but it had attacked me because I was standing in the gap.'

At the peak of the battle, Jane cried out for reinforcements, both angels and intercessors. God sent them both.

In the twinkling of an eye, Jane sensed an angel come into the room and usher out the spirit of darkness. The battle was over but Jane felt limp and drained.

Then a fever and laryngitis came. But she rejoiced that the victory had been the Lord's.

The next morning the answering machine in Jane's office recorded a call from Cindy Jacobs who, like Jane, is one of my 19 personal prayer partners.

Jane returned her call and routinely asked Cindy how she felt. Cindy's response was unforgettable.

'I'm fine, Jane,' she said, 'but the question is how are you?

What was that incredible force of darkness in your room at 2:00 A.M. this morning?

That was one of the most powerful principalities I have encountered! I was doing battle with you in intercession until its power was broken!'

Both Jane and Cindy are veteran spiritual warriors. Although the intensity of this battle was unusual, incidents like this are not.

As intercessors, they expect frequent bouts with the spirits of wickedness out to destroy the work of God.

I agree with Edwin Stube who says, 'Intercessory prayer is warfare, and the principal way in which the warfare is carried on.

The warfare has to be won first in prayer and then worked out in practice."

Today’s post -#1 The Power of Personal Prayer Partners, in the series taken from C. Peter Wagner’s book, PRAYER SHIELD, How to intercede for pastors, Christian leaders and others on the spiritual frontlines. (pgs. 34, 35) By Regal Books

The next post is to be 7/25,  Paul's Prayer Partners: Eodia and Syntychefrom C. Peter Wagner’s book, PRAYER SHIELD.

Let’s pray: Father, I trust that I'm being useful in praying for my own spiritual leaders. Make me aware of their particular needs, so I can pray effectively and fervently for them daily. I understand that my intercession is absolutely necessary to help bring them protection, provision, and inspiration. Bless them, their families, and their effect in the Kingdom's work here. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Ps. 35:23 "Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord."

Today’s quote: John Flavel -"Whatever be the ground of one's distress, it should drive him to, not from God."

Our thought today: It is a privilege in Christ to enter the place of prayer: Enter with a heart of thanksgiving, Bible open, pen in hand, with a heart of worship, ready to speak, longing to hear, and eager to respond!

Another good thought:  Do you understand that for the joy set before Christ, He endured the sufferings of the Cross for you? He could see you way back then, (2,000 years ago), and chose to take your sins upon Himself, and suffer the punishment that you deserve. He longs to have us come to Him to accept what He’s accomplished. He wants us to spend eternity with Him, and to enjoy all the beauties of Heaven! Won't you ask Him into your heart right now? If you will, He's right there with you, and He'll save you. Then begin to seek a Bible-centered church, my friend, and get with other believers who can encourage, instruct, and help you in your new faith.

#2 WARFARE PRAYER Intro cont'd

C. Peter Wagner goes on with
the introduction of his book:

Certain subjects handled in some depth in this book have so far not found their way into print.

I have included more biblical material here than I have found in any other book, partly because many are questioning whether there is biblical warrant for strategic-level spiritual warfare at all.

The concepts of spiritual territoriality and the naming of the powers have received considerable attention here.

Holiness is frequently mentioned in the other books, but rarely is it analyzed in the depth I believe is required for effective warfare prayer.

Many other subjects I deal with have also been mentioned by others, but each of us brings a particular insight that adds to our collective knowledge.

My first awareness of the potential strategic-level spiritual warfare has for effective evangelism was first sparked by Pastor Omar Cabrera of Argentina.

His "Vision of the Future" is listed as one of the world's ten largest churches.

When I visited him in 1985, he told me his personal experience of identifying and binding the territorial spirits controlling cities in which he was pioneering new works.

I am deeply indebted to Omar and his wife, Marfa, for the inspiration and support they have given me in this project.

I was fascinated to read a recent letter from Bernie May, the director of Wycliffe Bible Translators...

Bernie Way tells of a veteran translator who visited his office and, among other things, said,

   "I have two major goals
while I'm home. One, I need
to learn as much as I can
    about spiritual warfare.

Our struggle out there is not against the climate,
the malaria, or the false religions.

Our struggle is against the principalities, against the
powers, against the world rulers of this present
darkness, against the spirit ritual hosts of this present
    darkness,
against the spiritual hosts of wickedness
in the heavenly places of Ephesians 6:12."

He went on.

"My other goal," he said, "is to find some more people
who will stand with us in prayer. The only way we are
going to break through the spiritual darkness in that
land is by prayer. I need intercessors to stand with me."

Needless to say, I was excited to find the top two agenda
items of this missionary were the subjects of the first two
books in the trilogy on prayer that I am writing.

But I was even more excited when Bernie May himself wrote,

"Like my friend from Asia, I, too, need to know about
spiritual warfare. And I need people to stand with me
   in prayer."

I am convinced this is what the Spirit is saying, not only to Wycliffe Bible Translators, but to the churches throughout the nations of the world.

My prayer is that those who are hearing what the Spirit is saying will find this book an instrument in God's hands to help them draw closer to Him to open themselves in a new way to powerful warfare prayer.

Since 1990, my wife, Doris, and I have made many ministry trips to Argentina to observe firsthand and participate in what amounts to a laboratory for relating strategic-level spiritual warfare to evangelism.

For us, Argentina has been the front line in a highly significant experiment helping us to learn more about the spiritual dimensions of world evangelization.

At this point I will suggest three generalized levels for which there is a fairly broad consensus among Christian leaders who are specializing in this type of ministry.

I have found it helpful to distinguish the following;

    1. Ground-level spiritual warfare
   2. Occult-level spiritual warfare
   3. Strategic-level spiritual warfare.

{I (Jean) will be posting these as separate posts 9/30, 10/2, and 10/7}

Introduction cont'd

Pray for your pastor: "Protection. Thank You that no weapons formed against my pastor will prosper. As ______dwells in the shadow of the most high, deliver him/her from terror, darts of doubt, and diseases. Set Your angels around my pastor, and let no power of the enemy harm him/her. Turn aside rumors, gossip, criticism, abuse, and ungratefulness. May inordinate expectations, stress, and fatigue be cast into the see, and may every need and vision of _____'s be fulfilled (Ps. 91:1-11; Luke. 10:19; Mark 11:22-24).  (Scripture-Based Prayers to Pray for your Pastor by Terry Teykl)

Let’s pray:

   Father, I need to know
more about spiritual warfare,
so am asking for help in my
understanding of it.

   I se
e that the only way
we are going to break through the spiritual darkness in our land is by prayer.

Help me open myself in a new way to this powerful

warfare. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse: Rom. 4:20 "He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God."

Today’s quote: Randy Kilgore “God offers His presence to us in life’s darkest moments, which enables us, in turn, to be His presence to the hurting. Crying out for help — from others and from God — may be the strongest moment of our lives.”

Some thoughts today: Intercession is taking time for the Presence of God. Refreshing and stimulating

- Before we start being "Mr. Fix it", we need to spend time in God's Word, the Bible, and praying for guidance.

- When we are facing discouragement, we need to be in the presence of other believers.

C. Peter Wagner shares
with us: "In the New
New Testament, Jesus is the
intercessor pa
excellence.

His prayer for his people in John 17 reveals the loving heart Jesus had for the people and His desire to stand in the gap between them and the Father."

When folks pray, watch out!
Things happen!
God loves it, and longs
to respond!

"Thanks for encouraging me and being a part of this testimony. This is why we write:

Andrew Payack writes: I can't say enough about the content of this book and how it changes lives but most importantly, hearts. I was in the worst place in my life with my wife of 26+ years when she wanted a divorce, not to mention 6 beautiful children. My friend and pastor, lent me this book and it changed me, but most of all it was ALL the scripture I needed to overcome the sadness. Also, I got my christian wife to read it as well. She read it and I believe that she was convicted by the holy spirit, and our marriage was saved. Praise God! we are in love now more that at our wedding! Thanks for writing such a powerful book. I have to give the book back to my pastor, but I will definately be buying on for myself and my wife. We plan to read it from time to time to keep our marriage strong and filled with Christ!"

#115 The Pitfall of Lack of Personal Intercession

C. Peter Wagner: "I believe intercession for Christian leaders is the most under-utilized source of spiritual power in our churches today.

In fact, my next book in this series is projected to be on that subject.

#1 WARFARE PRAYER Introduction

C. Peter Wagner, in his
book, WARFARE PRAYER ,
tells us:

A wave of interest in the
supernatural, and the
Christian positions relating to spiritual warfare has been growing
for some years throughout the Christian world.

Books by authors such as Frank Peretti have stimulated certain audiences while books of other authors such as Walter Wink have stimulated other audiences.

"Breakthroughs" led by Larry Lea and spiritual warfare conferences led by John Wimber attract thousands.

Some theological seminaries are introducing courses on spirituality and power encounter, and healing and deliverance. A partial list of these appears in my book, Wrestling with Dark Angels (Regal Books).

I personally began tuning in to this new emphasis around 1980 when I began research on the spiritual dimensions of church growth.

I spent several years looking into the influence of supernatural signs and wonders on the growth of churches and compiled my findings in the book, How to Have a Healing Ministry (Regal Books).

Then in 1987 I began researching prayer.

After spending considerable time building a personal library and some bibliographies on prayer, I discovered three areas in the field that seemed important to me, and that are not adequately covered in research, writing and teaching. They are:

(1) strategic-level intercession, (2) intercession for Christian leaders, and (3) the relationship of prayer to the growth of the local church. I am dedicating several years to concentrate on these three areas.

One of the outcomes of my search has been the projection of a trilogy of books on prayer, one on each of the three subjects.

This book is the first, dealing with strategic-level spiritual warfare and the warfare prayer necessary to engage in it.

Many new books are coming out on spiritual warfare, but none of them so far has attempted to survey the field and draw broadly from theologians, biblical scholars, current authors and practitioners.

#1 WARFARE PRAYER
Introduction By
C. Peter Wagner
(pgs. 11, 12) Regal Books

A glance through the footnotes and the index of this book will indicate the spectrum of authorities I have consulted. I am grateful to them all. I certainly could not have written a very substantial book on my knowledge and experiences alone.

Let’s pray:

   Father, I have an interest
in the supernatural warfare
that is going on.

May I be open to what Your
plan is for me in regards to it.

As I read Wagner's notes on the subject, quicken me to understand my part.

I ask for Your guidance now, as I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Today’s Bible verse:  Jer. 1:12 "Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it."

Today’s quote: Darlene Lund – “In God’s eyes I was
more than I expected. So are you. Claim His word and
know nothing is impossible with God.”

Some thoughts today: As people, we tend to gather around somethingOnce we've become Christians, hopefully, we'll transcend our differences to fellowship in Christ. There's a bonding that takes place.

- As Christians, we share our identity; we "belong", as we're made of the same "stuff". We're "family" in Christ.

- Early Christians "broke bread together". (see Acts 2:42) They had a unity of mind, spirit and purpose, and loved hanging out together. They/we "fit in", no matter what the evil one says!

I am glad to be home again from traveling downstate. It was a good trip, and pleasant visits with family and friends. My husband asked me to get a guitar, as I had one some 46 years ago when we were married. I felt someone would have one, but was surprised and overwhelmed when the Lord provided it so amazingly Sunday at the ladies retreat. The cook/owner of the camp GAVE me one!
